Driving through Florida has never been an easy task. Traffic on I-4 alone can ruin your drive into Disney and Universal. Now, a new Florida law might make part of your car decor illegal.

According to WFTV9, this new law prohibits any obstruction of license plates, which means your license plate frame might have to go.
House Bill 253 and statute 320.061 passed on October 1st, 2025, making obstruction of your license plate a second-degree misdemeanor. The new legislation makes it illegal to block, cover, distort, or even slightly obscure a Florida license plate.

Penalties for this law include up to 60 days in jail or a $500 fine for knowingly driving with a covered plate. While it doesn’t mean all license plate frames have to go, it does mean you need to check yours just in case. Frames are permitted only if they don’t cover the numbers or letters, registration decal, the word “Florida,” or any part of the plate border.

The bill also clarifies that you cannot attach a “substance, reflective matter, illumination device, spray, coating, or covering” that would interfere with the visibility of the plate. This shouldn’t impact most license plate frames; however, it won’t hurt Floridians to double-check.
