As the Magic Kingdom prepares to turn 55 in October of 2026, the park is set to have a game-changing year that will see not one, not two, but three classic attractions updated for a new generation of guests, all while two massive new lands rise at the back of the park.
Over the course of my 30+ years visiting Disney theme parks, I’ve seen the Magic Kingdom transform a great deal. However, few years match 2025, which saw the closure of the entire Rivers of America. With that iconic opening day area closed, what will 2026 bring? Well, let’s find out.
Big Thunder Mountain Roars Back
First off, there’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The iconic E-Ticket has been closed since January 2025 for a massive refurbishment project.
According to Disney, the attraction is scheduled to reopen in 2026 with “new magic” including a fully refurbished track and a new sequence inspired by the Rainbow Caverns of Disneyland’s Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Blasts Off
On the other side of the park, Tomorrowland’s Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin closed on August 4th for a refurbishment.
The refurbished attraction will feature new ride vehicles, new blasters, and a new scene featuring the parks original robot character named Buddy who will ensure “departing Space Rangers are fully prepared for their mission (by) enthusiastically providing encouragement, final system checks on their Star Cruisers, and a chance to hone their blaster aim.”
Uncle Walt Comes to the Carousel of Progress
At the 2025 D23 Ultimate Fan Event, Disney made a surprise announcement that major — and long-awaited — changes were coming to the iconic Carousel of Progress at the Magic Kingdom.
The show, which dates back to the 1964 World’s Fair, will see a Walt Disney animatronic — similar to the one that debuted at Disneyland earlier this year, though appearing with an Imagineering workshop as opposed to his office — will now be part of the attraction’s pre-show, and the entire presentation will be updated, likely with a new finale. This refurbishment is scheduled to begin and be completed in 2026.
While those are the big projects coming in 2026, two further MASSIVE additions — the Cars-themed Piston Peak in Frontierland and the Villains Land expansion coming “beyond” Big Thunder Mountain — are currently under construction at the park. While both are still years away, their impact is still being felt through construction walls and detours.
The Magic Kingdom is in the midst of a years-long transformation, with 2026 being the first step as the park enters its second half-century. Stay tuned to DFB for more on Walt Disney World’s evolution.
