You don’t want to get sunburned on your first day of your Disney World vacation and be forced to live with that choice for the rest of the week!

Disney World
I’ve been going to Disney World for decades, and I even went into the Disney parks every week for a year as part of my job. So you would think I would know all the ins and outs, but unfortunately for me, even seasoned Annual Passholders make mistakes. I’m going to tell you my tale in hopes that you avoid this painful experience.
I thought I was prepared for a full day at Disney World! The water bottle was packed, comfortable sneakers laced up, and Lightning Lane selections locked in. But what I overlooked turned out to be the most important thing: sunscreen. Hours in the Florida sun left me with a painful sunburn on the first day that made the rest of my vacation a lot less magical. Looking back, I realize there were a few simple things I could have done differently to protect my skin.

Magic Kingdom!
First and foremost, don’t underestimate how strong the Florida sun is. Even if it’s overcast or you think you’ll be in shade while standing in lines, UV rays are everywhere. Apply sunscreen before you head out for the day, and remember that one coat isn’t enough. Reapplying is key, especially after sweating, riding water attractions, or just being outside for hours. I skipped this step and paid for it with bright red shoulders. If you forget sunscreen at home, don’t panic. Disney hotels carry it in their shops, and most park gift shops sell sunscreen too.

If you do get burned, there are ways to minimize the discomfort. Aloe vera gel, cool compresses, and staying hydrated can help your skin recover faster. Wearing loose, breathable clothing makes it easier to move around without irritating the burn. I learned that keeping a small after-sun lotion or an aloe pack in your park bag can be just as valuable as having Band-Aids or ibuprofen on hand.

Prevention is, of course, the best solution. Wide-brimmed hats, lightweight long sleeves, and sunglasses can provide extra layers of defense. Setting a timer on your phone to remind you when it’s time to reapply sunscreen can also be a game-changer because it’s easy to get caught up in rides, parades, and snacks.

Getting sunburned at Disney World was a mistake I’ll never forget. With a little more planning, I could have saved myself the discomfort and truly enjoyed every moment, so learn from me! Be sure to follow DFB for more Disney tips.
