Are you happy to be in Paris? Well, it might not be the real Paris, but stepping through the portal to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic at Epic Universe sure does make us feel like we are.
We headed to Le Gobelet Noir to try some dishes and see if it’s worth the visit. This quick service spot is filled with European cuisine, including French, German, and Hungarian, and we’re ready to dive in and live our Harry Potter dreams.
We started with the Herb Crusted Cod, which features cod accompanied by potatoes and caramelized leeks in a creamy broth, priced at $19.99. The cod was served in a deep bowl filled with a creamy broth, and we loved it. It’s topped with herbed bread crumbs and is lighter than many of the other dishes served here. We were truly surprised by how much we liked it!
Then we had the Jägerschnitzel, a crispy pork cutlet served with brown mushroom gravy and tavern fries, for $17.99. We loved how thin and crispy this was and how it wasn’t greasy in the slightest. The mushroom gravy on top is your standard gravy with not too many mushrooms on it. The steak-cut fries are fluffy on the inside and well-salted on the outside. We think Epic Universe really crushed it with the fries because we like them almost everywhere we go!
We followed that with Coq au Vin for $17.99. This is a red wine-marinated chicken dish featuring mushrooms, pancetta, pearl onions, and pommes puree. The chicken was only slightly on the dry side, but we liked how the toppings were enhanced with bacon to add some extra salt and texture. The mashed potatoes were creamy and well-seasoned, but we were missing the classic flavor of red wine throughout the dish.
Then we tried the Knödel Soup and Salad Combo for $13.99. It’s a rich chicken broth with Knödel, roasted chicken, and herb brioche croutons, served with a house greens salad drizzled with champagne vinaigrette. The soup was like a chicken and dumpling soup with two large knödel inside. It was tasty, but felt a bit out there for being at a theme park, especially a quick service restaurant.
We also tried the Ancient Forest Salad for $12.99, which features kale, arugula, frisée, cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions, and beets, all drizzled in an herb vinaigrette. While we enjoyed the size of the salad, there wasn’t any protein, and we were concerned about it not filling us up to conquer our whole day at Epic Universe. The dressing was slightly sweet, and berries were on top, which is great for those who prefer a sweeter, rather than savory, take on salad.
For dessert, we had the Baklava, featuring pistachios, walnuts, vegan anglaise, and coconut nectar, for $6.99. If you’re used to the traditional version of baklava, be aware that this is probably different from what you would normally expect. The phyllo pastry is not crispy like it usually is, but there are tons of pistachios on it, along with vanilla icing and glaze. The whole treat was fine, but you’ll probably find better desserts somewhere else in the parks.
Overall, this restaurant consistently surprises us. While the food is decent, it always feels a bit odd getting it from a quick service restaurant, and we think we would enjoy it more at a sit-down, table service restaurant. That being said, the dishes taste good and are very pretty, and we also love that the air conditioning is blasting in this spot. It’s a great place to cool down.
In the meantime, make sure you keep following Disney Food Blog for more food reviews for your next theme park visit.
