The Bahamas are a very popular spot for cruise lines to travel to.
The crystal clear oceans and white sand beaches are an easy allure for many travelers, especially those who live in colder states or don’t have any beaches nearby to visit in/around their hometown. Disney Cruise Line has many stops there (including their own private resort), and other cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Lines, among others, do the same. However, at Carnival’s newly opened Celebration Key Resort, two different travelers have drowned in one day.
ABC News has reported that over the weekend, two travelers drowned in separate incidents at Celebration Key, the $600 million private resort for Carnival Cruise Line guests that opened in July, within three hours of each other. In a statement by Carnival Cruise Lines, the company said, “Our lifeguards and medical team responded to two separate emergency incidents at Celebration Key on Friday — one in the lagoon and one at the beach. Sadly, both guests have passed away.”
One of the travelers was a passenger of the Mardi Gras Carnival Cruise Line ship, while the other was sailing on the Carnival Elation. Both were traveling with their families, and the Royal Bahamas Police Force has confirmed they’re looking into both deaths.
One victim was a 79-year-old man who became unresponsive while snorkeling off one of the beaches on the island. A lifeguard got him from the water and administered CPR, but to no avail. A few hours later, a 74-year-old woman was discovered unresponsive in a swimming pool at the resort. A lifeguard pulled the woman from the water and administered CPR, but it was unsuccessful.
Autopsies are scheduled to be performed to discover the exact cause of death in both cases. The names of the tourists have not been released. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on the situation.

I wonder if the 79 y/o was wearing a total face mask with built in snorkel. They can cause significant breathing of exhaled air with resultant elevated blood CO2 leading to cardiac compromise.
