Waiting in line for a ride that shuts down right before you board? Yeah, that hurts.
Slinky Dog Dash is one of the most popular rides in all of Disney World, and it also happens to be one of the most weather-sensitive rides out there. So if you’re heading to Toy Story Land with your eyes set on riding the cutest coaster ever made (and best IMHO), there’s one thing we really wish we had known before we ever stepped foot in that queue. And trust us—it’ll save you time, frustration, and possibly your spot in line.
Not Checking the Accuweather MinuteCast Before You Queue Up
Slinky Dog Dash is an outdoor roller coaster, which means it shuts down any time there’s lightning in the area—or even just the threat of it. What makes it tricky is that Florida weather is wild. You can be standing in full sun and still be 10 minutes away from a total downpour that closes the ride for who knows how long.
We’ve been there. You wait in line for 45 minutes, you’re just about to board, and then that announcement hits: Slinky Dog is currently closed due to inclement weather in the area. Everyone groans. The queue empties out. Time wasted, mood tanked.
But here’s the thing—we could’ve avoided all that with one simple step.
Download the Accuweather app.
Specifically, check out the MinuteCast feature. It gives you a hyper-local forecast, down to the minute, of when rain is expected to start. We’re not talking vague percentages or “chance of showers” here. We’re talking: “Rain expected to start in 19 minutes.” And honestly? It’s freakishly accurate.
We now make it a rule—before getting in the Slinky Dog Dash line, we check the app. If MinuteCast says there’s rain coming in the next 20-30 minutes? We skip it and come back later. Because here’s the kicker: even the possibility of lightning shuts this ride down, and once that happens, it can stay closed for hours. Cast Members can’t tell you when (or if) it’ll reopen. And if you’re deep in the queue when it goes down? You just lost all that time and still didn’t ride.
This tip especially matters if you’re not rope dropping.
In the morning, you’ve got a better chance at dry weather, shorter lines, and less of that blazing Florida heat. But if you’re trying to ride later in the day—like early afternoon, which is prime thunderstorm time—you really need to double-check the radar before you commit to that line.
Here’s how we use it:
- Open Accuweather.
- Make sure you’re on “Today” (you can see that on the bottom left). You’ll see MinuteCast right in the center of the app.
- Set your location to Disney’s Hollywood Studios (or let it find you).
- Look at the “precipitation starting in…” line.
- Decide if the ride is worth the risk.
It takes less than 30 seconds, and it’s saved us from wasting so much time waiting in a doomed queue. Honestly, we do this now for all outdoor rides—but Slinky Dog Dash is especially prone to weather shutdowns, so it’s the one we always check first.
A Few Extra Tips While We’re at It
While we’re on the topic of Slinky Dog Dash, here are a few other things to keep in mind:
- That queue can feel brutally hot. Even on a clear day, you don’t want to be standing in it too long in the afternoon heat. Either rope drop it or save it for later in the evening when the sun’s gone down.
- It’s a family coaster, but not boring. Don’t let the “Toy Story” theme fool you—this ride is fun. Smooth, not too intense, but it’s got some sneaky little thrills.
- Wait times climb fast. This one regularly hits 70–100 minutes. If you see it under 60, that’s actually a solid wait.
But again—none of that matters if the ride shuts down just as you’re about to board. That’s why we wish someone had told us earlier to check the weather down to the minute before stepping in line. Accuweather’s MinuteCast is now one of our Disney day essentials, right up there with water bottles and portable chargers.
So before you join the sea of guests snaking through that outdoor queue, do a quick weather check. Your future self (and your park schedule) will thank you.
