Head’s up, if you’re planning on flying for your next vacation, you could have accidentally packed a few BANNED items in your luggage!

MCO Airport Security
Between planning your flight and navigating your way around the airport, you’re already feeling exhausted, but delaying your time going through the security line just to get to your gate could make you your own worst enemy. TSA has made several changes recently, and we’re giving you the scoop on a few popular items you’ve thought to bring along that are actually BANNED from flying.
We get it — you’re packing “all the things” in preparation for a vacation away from home. Making sure you have everything accounted for before, during, and after your actual vacation is essential to your success (and probably your sanity, if we’re being totally honest). However, you’ll want to be careful of what you’re packing, even with seemingly innocuous items, because it could be the very thing that causes some trouble for you when going through airport security.

Welcome to the Orlando International Airport
TSA’s list of banned items isn’t something you’ve probably thought to browse regularly, so we’re giving you a heads up on a few things you’ll want to be sure to leave behind before you travel!
1. Loose Lithium Batteries
Loose spare lithium batteries like the ones you might use for cameras, drones, and even the most seemingly small items could get you in trouble if you’re not packing them correctly. You won’t be able to pack these in your checked luggage; however, you CAN carry them on the plane with you in your carry-on bag!

Phone Charger!
Even though they’re allowed to be carried in a carry-on bag, you’ll still want to be certain they’re stored safely to prevent short-circuiting. This is extremely important to keep in mind if you’re planning on traveling with your cameras, equipment, and small devices like rechargeable battery packs, and need to store your extra batteries (especially for photography).
2. Replica Weapons and Toy Guns
Trying to travel with a few pranks or toy weapons? I wouldn’t. TSA’s strict policy for anything that even remotely looks like a weapon, even if it’s a toy, could land you in hot water quickly. That’s right — toy guns, prop weapons, and even bubble guns are banned from being stowed away in your carry-on luggage.

Pirates of the Caribbean Bubble Sword
This is especially important to keep in mind for families of little pirates or action stars (in their own imaginations) traveling to theme parks or traveling during holidays, where gifts are often exchanged. Just remember, these items can easily get confiscated during TSA security screenings, so you might want to think twice before you let the kids pick out that toy sword souvenir if you’re flying.
3. Alcohol Over 140 Proof
Alcohol in carry-on bags is allowed to be brought on the plane with you if the bottle is under 3.4 ounces, but there’s another part of the label you’ll need to check!

Don’t forget to check the label on those bottles!
The lesser-known fact about these alcohol bottles is that anything over 140 proof is completely banned by TSA. This includes high-proof spirits like grain alcohol and some strong rums. TSA has forbidden these higher proof liquids due to flammability potential, and they’re completely banned from your luggage — not even putting them in your checked baggage will save them. If you’re going to be flying home after your vacation (especially if you’re cruising and planning on picking up a few foreign spirits), be sure to check each bottle carefully before you make your purchases.
4. Smart Luggage with Non-Removable Batteries
Smart luggage can be a huge convenience when traveling, especially if you’re toting around a suitcase with built-in USB ports and tracking features. But just like we touched on earlier, if the lithium battery can’t be removed, TSA won’t allow it through security or even onto the plane.

Orlando Airport
Airlines have also been instructed not to accept them into checked luggage for safety reasons. Always be sure you can remove these batteries (and store them safely in your carry-on bag) before you fly with smart bags.
5. Wrapped Gifts
TSA has no issue (for the most part) with you toting your gifts while flying. However, it will become an issue if you decide to wrap the gifts you’re packing before you board your flight!

They might get thrown to the Jungle Cruise residents
Technically, TSA DOES allow you to bring gifts through security; however, don’t be surprised when you go to check your wrapped presents only to find they’ve been unwrapped. TSA agents have the authority to unwrap gifts if the contents need further screening. It’s a common occurrence to watch someone at the security screening seething in annoyance when their carefully wrapped gift is opened on the spot. As an alternative, we suggest using gift bags for your gifts or wrapping them once you’ve reached your destination.
6. Certain Foods
If you’re planning on packing snacks for your trip, you’ll want to pay close attention to TSA’s rules!

You won’t be taking your EPCOT festival soup back with you so easily
More often than not, TSA treats food items like liquids. Remember, spreadable foods like peanut butter, hummus, and dips over 3.4 ounces aren’t allowed in carry-ons. The same goes for canned foods with liquid in them, like you’d expect to find in a can of soup or stew. It’s easy to assume food you’re packing with you is safe, but just remember, if it can be spread or poured, it probably needs to go in checked baggage. But, don’t worry — those Mickey-shaped snacks are our favorite solution for a quick snack!
