So when it comes to food, we know a lot of folks probably wouldn’t think much about visiting Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground if they’re not staying there.
Sure, the resort is gorgeous and fun to walk around. It’s also fun to visit Tri-Circle-D Ranch to see some horses and even indulge in a little horseback riding. But food? Well, you might not think this is a food destination in Disney World. Well, we’re here to tell you that you might be wrong if you think that. We just visited one of the dining spots at Fort Wilderness, and we’re already planning on going back — no, REALLY!
We just recently stopped by Crockett’s Tavern in Fort Wilderness to check out the all-new menu there. This wagon-wheel full-service bar doesn’t just offer tasty drinks, though, including moonshine cocktails. It also serves up some good chow. It’s close to the Fort Wilderness Marina and Settlement Bus Stop, so it’s pretty easy to get to from Magic Kingdom.
We started with the House-smoked Beef Brisket Sliders for $18. You get three sliders served with creamy coleslaw, horseradish cream, and French fries. First, the brisket, which was so tender that it was falling apart. It’s definitely on the fattier side, but that works in its favor. The horseradish cream added a nice boldness, but it wasn’t super strong or spicy.
The coleslaw was also crispy and tasty, but we wish there was more on the sliders to balance out the smokiness. The buns are nice and fluffy, though. Plus, the fries were well-seasoned and crispy, and what more do you want from a fried potato stick?
There was no way we were going to pass up the Burnt Ends Macaroni & Cheese because y’all know we consider ourselves Disney World mac and cheese connoisseurs. For $18, you get white cheddar macaroni and cheese, glazed pork burnt ends, and pickled peppers. We are happy to report that this mac and cheese is some of the best in Disney World. The mac and cheese itself is creamy with a lovely white cheddar flavor.
The burnt ends were crispy on the outside and very meaty, plus they had a coating of BBQ sauce, which worked well with the cheesiness of the mac and cheese. We would leave Magic Kingdom and come here again for this Mac and cheese, yes, we would.
We also tried the Bacon Cheeseburger for $19, which is made with with House-smoked Cherrywood Bacon, Garlic-Herb Cheese, and Sweet Onion Jam served with French Fries.
All of these ingredients work fantastically together, and were all very fresh! The bacon was fantastic, nice and chewy in the best way, and the onion jam was a great compliment for the flavors. The fries were seasoned beautifully and we’d totally get them again. Our only complaint was that we would have liked to have a slice of American or Cheddar cheese on there to really enhance that cheese!
Our final entree item was the Hot Honey Chicken Wings for $16, which are Fried Chicken Wings, Chili-infused Honey, and Vinegar Cucumbers.
These had the perfect amount of spiciness! They weren’t too overpowering or intense, but had a great heat along with the additional flavor. We LOVED that the wings were dripping in honey, and we couldn’t get enough of the mix of sweet and spicy here. If you don’t usually do spicy, we’d say beware a little bit, because they still may be pretty hot for you, but the ranch and blue cheese will help to cool them down a bit.
Well, after all that savory, we had to end with a little something sweet. We ordered the Old-fashioned Buttermilk Pie that comes with a seasonal topping for $9. The seasonal topping is currently strawberries and whipped cream. Our reporter said, “I can’t say I have ever had buttermilk pie before, but now I am sad it has been missing in my life.” It’s like a mix between a custard and a cake. It’s soft and creamy, sort of like a cheesecake, but not quite as smooth.
The pie was very moist and held together well. We mostly tasted vanilla and sugar, so the strawberries really added to the flavor. The whipped cream also tasted homemade and just added a nice creamy and light component. This is another food we would leave the parks for — it’s that good.
So if you find yourself in Magic Kingdom, which, yes, can be a bit of a good food desert in Disney World, and you want a decent meal, consider trekking over to Fort Wilderness for a bite instead. You’ll get a nice break in the middle of your park day and some satisfying food.
Stay tuned to DFB for more.
