As a full-time travel editor who basically lives out of a suitcase, I’ve learned one major lesson: The key to packing light is learning how to do laundry on the go.
That’s why the one product I’m most hoping to see marked down during Amazon Prime Day is the Scrubba Wash Bag. If it does? I’m finally hitting “buy.”
Yes, you can do laundry in your hotel room sink — and I currently do, on almost every trip. I usually launder the clothes I traveled in on the night I arrive — and then wear them back home. This eliminates packing anxiety — because I know that I will be re-packing to go home exactly like I packed for the trip. And while sink laundry is fine, I like the features of the Scrubba — especially the flexible internal washboard that actually scrubs without damaging fabrics.
The Scrubba Wash Bag is essentially a portable washing machine that weighs just a few ounces. The reviews say it effectively cleans T-shirts, socks, even leggings — better than you would expect for a 5-minute wash.
I know that some travelers use a wet bag for laundry, but the scrubbing wash board on the inside of this bag is what I think makes it more effective. And it folds up to about the size of a soda can. That makes it ultra-packable.
It’s 5 oz of genius: Unroll it, add soap, water, rub for a few minutes, and voilà—clean clothes anywhere. But it is a bit of a splurge — that’s why I’ll be watching for it to go below $55 on Amazon Prime Day!
My Prime Day shopping strategy is to add the things I’m interested in to a list in the Amazon app — when deals on things on your list are about to start, you’ll get a notification. I plan to snag the Scrubba Wash Bag if it drops below $45. Fingers crossed!
Here’s why I’m planning to splurge on the Scrubba Wash Bag:
- It will save me money and time.
- It’s ultra-packable.
- It actually works, at least according to hundreds of reviews!
My Full On-the-Go Laundry Kit
If you’re going to wash your clothes on the road, you’ll want more than just a wash bag. Here are a couple items I already own and recommend — they’re designed with travel in mind.
Earth Breeze Laundry Detergent Sheets
These are my go-to detergent sheets for travel. They’re mess-free, dissolve instantly in cold or warm water, and they come in a biodegradable package. No bulky bottles. No TSA issues.
When I travel with these, I pre-cut a few sheets into smaller squares since I’m doing tiny loads of laundry.
Sea to Summit Lite Line Travel Clothesline
This thing weighs under 2 oz and doesn’t require clothespins (thanks to its bead-and-bungee design). It stretches across a hotel room, bathroom, balcony—anywhere. I’ve used it in Airbnbs, hotels, and even inside cruise cabins.
Just like the Scrubba, this portable clothesline packs into a tiny pouch — you barely notice it’s there until you need it.
I’m often traveling for 2+ weeks at a time, and while I’ve got packing down to a science, this trio gives me true freedom:
- No checking bags
- No overpriced laundry services
- No waiting around for a machine
Plus, I’ve found that washing a few things by hand every couple of days makes my travel wardrobe last longer and smell fresher. And let’s be honest—on a long trip, that’s priceless.
