If you’re planning a trip to Universal Orlando during hurricane season (hello June through November), it’s worth knowing which hotels will keep you safest and sanest when the storm rolls in.
We’ve actually stayed through a hurricane at Universal and have a few top picks based on experience. These hotels don’t just hold up during bad weather — they actually go out of their way to keep guests comfortable, entertained, and well-fed.
Cabana Bay Beach Resort
Let’s just start with our go-to: Cabana Bay. One of our reporters stayed here with her dog during a hurricane her first year living in Orlando, and honestly, it was the perfect choice. The buildings are solid — we’re talking concrete and stucco — and she was in the main building, not one of the tower rooms that has more windows. That made a big difference for peace of mind when the wind kicked up.
The hotel was totally prepped for the storm. They had character meet-and-greets, games in the lobby, complimentary popcorn, and even console games like Xbox and PlayStation set up to keep kids busy. They discounted meals for guests to grab and take back to their rooms (which was a lifesaver), and while the bowling alley was booked solid, they were super nice about keeping a waitlist and calling people if something opened up.
Originally, she was booked in an ADA-accessible room since that was all that was left online. But when she arrived, they moved her into a standard room to keep that one available for someone who needed it. Honestly, that level of awareness and flexibility from staff during a hurricane? A+. Plus, the price wasn’t crazy either.
Loews Portofino Bay Hotel
If you’re looking for a more luxe option, Portofino Bay should absolutely be on your radar. This one’s built like a fortress — thick walls, minimal exterior windows in guest rooms, and a layout that gives “old-world Italy,” not “weather emergency.”
It’s quiet and has enough dining and recreation options that you won’t feel stuck. Plus, with the full-service spa and fitness center, it’s easier to stay relaxed while the storm does its thing. There’s also a Starbucks right on site. Trust us, having caffeine access during a weather lockdown is something you’ll be grateful for.
Hard Rock Hotel
This one’s a solid middle ground. It has more of that trendy, energetic vibe but still gives you the safety and convenience you want when things get rough outside. The building design doesn’t have a ton of glass-heavy architecture, which helps during high winds. And the on-site amenities are some of the best — restaurant variety, shops, fitness center, and pool area (when it’s not pouring sideways outside).
If you’re stuck inside for a day or two, it’s not a bad place to be. Also, the hotel staff are pros when it comes to storm protocols. They’re usually great about updates, meal access, and helping families with stuff to do indoors.
Loews Royal Pacific Resort
Royal Pacific has a tropical island vibe, but don’t let that fool you — it’s still a well-built hotel that can ride out a storm. Guest rooms tend to have limited exterior exposure, and like the others, there’s a full range of restaurants and amenities right on site.
The dining here is especially convenient in a hurricane scenario — indoor seating, decent variety, and staff who know how to pivot quickly when weather hits. There’s also the bonus of refillable drink mugs. During a hurricane, even small comforts like that help more than you’d think.
What To Look For When Booking During Hurricane Season
- Prioritize buildings with solid, concrete construction and fewer floor-to-ceiling windows.
- Stick to main buildings rather than towers when possible.
- Look for hotels with multiple dining options, indoor recreation, and entertainment.
- Don’t be afraid to call and ask how the hotel typically handles hurricanes — the good ones will have a plan ready and are happy to talk about it.
- If you’re traveling with pets, Cabana Bay is especially pet-friendly and prepared.
Final Thoughts
Nobody wants a hurricane during their Universal trip, but if it happens, you can still be in a good spot. We’ve been through it, and having the right hotel made it way less stressful than it could’ve been. Whether you’re after budget-friendly, family-focused, or upscale chill, Universal Orlando has hurricane-ready hotels that can take care of you when the skies turn gray.
