A new Florida law goes into effect on July 1st, 2025, that could seriously impact the roads and your future vacations.

Florida is changing!
House Bill 351, also known as the “Super Speeder” law, establishes that “dangerous excessive speeding” is a criminal offense under the state. This new bill could lead to more punishments based on excessive speeding, so we’re breaking down everything you need to know.
If you live in Florida or you’re traveling there, you need to know about House Bill 351. The Florida Sentate states that, “The bill creates a criminal offense for “dangerous excessive speeding” if a motor vehicle driver exceeds the speed limit by 50 miles per hour (mph) or more, or operates a motor vehicle at 100 mph or more in a manner that threatens the safety of other persons or property or interferes with the operation of any vehicle.”

Be careful on the road!
If you’re driving 50 miles over the speed limit or you’re driving over 100 mph in a dangerous way, you can now be more severely punished in Florida. The bill further explains that anyone who commits this crime will be punished as follows.
- Upon a first conviction, up to 30 days in jail, a fine of $500, or both.
- Upon a second or subsequent conviction, up to 90 days in jail, a fine of $1,000, or both.
- A person convicted of a second or subsequent violation of dangerous excessive speeding within five years after the date of a prior conviction for such an offense must have his or her driving privilege revoked for at least 180 days but no more than one year.

It also states that any driver who commits this infraction must appear in front of a “designated official at a mandatory hearing.” While this new bill does mean that you can be arrested, it only authorizes and does not require an officer to note the excessive speeding on your ticket.

Florida
While speeding is already a civil offense, HB 351 makes it so that excessive speeding is a criminal, arrestable offense. If you are charged more than once with excessive speeding within 5 years can also lead to your license being suspended temporarily. The intent of this law is to lead to safer roads and harsher punishments for anyone making the roads more dangerous.

Be cautious when driving.

We are AP holders and drive from our home on the west coast to stay at Disney routinely. So glad this law is going into effect. Maybe I 4 will be a little less dangerous. We also just installed a top of the line dash cam because we’ve been too close to being run into so many times by drivers flying in and around cars that are already driving a little over the speed. This means they are driving way over the limit. We’ve had cars, pickups, and vans, etc., tuck in dangerously across our bumper to pass a car in the left lane from the right lane and then back into the left. It’s an accident waiting to happen!
