It feels like Southwest Airlines has been in the news a lot recently. They’ve recently changed their free bags and open seating policy, and are now making another change.
If you’re planning on booking a flight with Southwest in the second half of the year, you might want to start planning your trip now.
Southwest will be cutting flights for the second half of 2025. This is after both United Airlines and Delta Air Lines announced earlier this month that they will be scaling back their domestic flights for the second half of the year.
In a filing report, Southwest says, “Amid the current macroeconomic uncertainty, it is difficult to forecast given recent and short-lived booking trends.”
Southwest expects unit revenue to be down as much as 4% in the second quarter compared to the previous year. This is about a net loss of $149 million, or $0.26 loss per diluted share.
The airline plans to add assigned and extra-legroom seats in the third quarter of this year and charge for bags next month.
If you fly Southwest, here are a few important dates you need to know:
- Seats with extra legroom will start on May 1st
- Checked bags will be charged for any flights booked after May 27th
- Reserved seating will start for flights in early 2026
As Southwest cuts back on flights, we’ll be keeping an eye out for more promotions and sales for your upcoming travel adventures. Keep following Disney Food Blog for all the news you need to know for your next trip.
