It’s part of a trend that’s only getting bigger — guests hiding ducks for others to find. But recently, rumors started swirling that Carnival might crack down on the practice… and people had opinions. So, what’s the deal with ducks?

Here’s the quick backstory: guests have been hiding small rubber ducks all over Carnival cruise ships for the past few years. It’s basically a floating scavenger hunt. Some ducks have little tags saying where they’re from, others have cute cruise-themed messages, and the idea is simple — hide a duck, make someone smile when they find it.

This trend is fan-led and totally unofficial, but it’s picked up steam thanks to Facebook groups and cruisers sharing their finds. Some people collect ducks from every ship they’ve sailed on. Others bring bags full of the little guys just to spread some joy. It’s become a whole vibe.

But then… the internet did what it does and made people panic.

Wait, is Carnival banning ducks??

That’s what a recent YouTube video title suggested. The video asked, “Is Carnival considering canceling people from bringing ducks on board?” and the cruise community immediately started freaking out. Enter: John Heald.

If you’ve ever cruised with Carnival or followed their social media, you probably know the name. He’s the Brand Ambassador and senior cruise director for Carnival Cruise Lines. He responded to the whole duck drama in a video on his Facebook page, and honestly? He shut it down in the best possible way. “The answer is no,” he said right off the bat.

He explained that the rumor started because someone said they walk around the ship picking up ducks and throwing them away. (Why? No one knows.) John didn’t hold back: “I don’t know why oh why oh why somebody would do that. Listen, not everybody is going to like hiding the ducks. Not everybody is going to enjoy finding them, but the majority of people do and it brings joy to those people. I’ve said this over and over again, why would that bother you?” Fair question.

Then he gave his stamp of approval once and for all: “If somebody finds a little duck and it brings you joy, if somebody hides it and it brings you joy, who cares? Keep bringing the ducks. Keep hiding them. Keep finding them.”

So there you have it. Straight from the cruise director himself — Carnival is not banning rubber ducks. They’re totally fine with it, as long as you’re being respectful and not tossing ducks into the pool filters or anything wild like that.

What this means if you’re cruising soon

If you’re sailing with Carnival anytime soon and want to join the duck game, go for it! A few quick tips if you’re new to it:

You can find cruise ducks on Etsy, Amazon, or even your local dollar store.
Most cruisers add little tags to their ducks with their name, sailing date, or a fun message.
Hiding spots range from obvious (on a ledge in a hallway) to creative (tucked near a planter, behind a statue, etc.).
Don’t hide ducks in places that could cause a safety issue or interfere with crew operations. Keep it friendly and fun.

Carnival has leaned into this trend in a low-key way, letting the cruisers run with it — and honestly, it’s kind of refreshing to see a big cruise line just say, “Yeah, this makes people happy.
