We’re almost halfway through February and that means you’re trip to Disney World is coming up soon! Are you getting ready for all the changes?
Every year, Disney makes little tweaks here and there, but 2025 has brought some MAJOR rule changes that you NEED to know about before your next trip. We’re talking updates that could impact your hotel stay, your parking plans, your soda-drinking strategy, and, uh… some hygiene rules you probably didn’t know existed. So let’s break it all down before you get caught off guard on your next trip to Disney World!
Hotel Cancellation Policy Just Got Stricter
First things first – don’t let this new cancellation policy cost you HUNDREDS of dollars. Disney has tightened up its cancellation rules, and if you’re not paying attention, you could be waving goodbye to your deposit.
As of 2025, if you book a room-only Disney World hotel reservation, you now need to cancel at least EIGHT DAYS before your arrival to get your deposit back. If you cancel seven days or fewer before check-in, your deposit (which is the cost of one night’s stay) is completely non-refundable.
Before this change, guests could cancel up to five days in advance and still get their money back. It’s only a three-day difference, but if your plans change last minute, that’s enough to cost you some serious cash.
The good news is that vacation packages (hotel + park tickets) still have the same cancellation policy as before: cancel 30+ days in advance for a full refund, cancel 2-29 days in advance with a $200 fee, and if you cancel less than 48 hours before arrival, you lose everything.
The moral of the story is to plan ahead and consider travel insurance. If anything unexpected happens (illness, emergencies, weather issues), travel insurance could save you from losing a LOT of money. Disney even offers its own Travel Protection Plan, but you may find better third-party options, so do your research!
Resort Parking is STILL Super Strict
Let’s be real – Disney World parking has been a bit of a pain ever since the COVID era, and it looks like the strict rules are here to stay.
Under the current rule, only resort guests and those with a confirmed table-service dining reservation can park at a Disney World hotel. So if you were hoping to park at, say, the Polynesian just to grab a Dole Whip and watch the fireworks…think again.
While some resorts may enforce this rule more than others, it’s best not to push your luck. Cast Members will check your reservation at the security gate, and if you don’t have one, you’ll be turned away.
And don’t think you can get around it by using Disney transportation either. During busy seasons (holidays, peak summer months), we’ve seen Disney limit resort access even for guests arriving by boat, monorail, or Skyliner. Our team has even been denied access to Fort Wilderness by boat just because we didn’t have a reservation!
The bottom line is that if you’re not staying at the resort or dining there, don’t count on being able to park there or even visit during peak times. If you still want to check out the hotels, use Disney’s complimentary transportation options whenever possible (but be aware that even those may be restricted at times).
Free Soda Refills Are No More (At Least at THIS Spot)
Soda lovers, brace yourselves because one of the best refill hacks at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is officially GONE.
Remember that 40-ounce Yak & Yeti Local Food Cafes tumbler? The one that used to give you free soda refills all day and cheap refills on return visits? Well…say goodbye to that perk.
As of 2025, Yak & Yeti still sells the tumbler, but the free refill deal is no longer a thing. There was a lot of confusion over where you could and couldn’t refill it, so the restaurant decided to just scrap the perk entirely.
You can still buy refillable mugs at Disney World – like the resort refillable mugs (usable only at hotel quick-service spots) and the water park refillable mugs – but this was one of the few park-based options for unlimited refills, and now it’s gone.
What can you do instead? Bring your own drinks! You’re totally allowed to carry your own bottled beverages into the parks (as long as they’re non-alcoholic and not in glass containers). We always grab a pack of Diet Coke from a grocery store before heading to Disney – it’s WAY cheaper than paying Disney prices for sodas all day long.
The DIARRHEA Rule (Yes, You Read That Right)
Okay, we need to talk about this one. You know those splash pads around Disney World? Like the new Moana’s Voyage splash pad at the Polynesian’s DVC Island Tower or the Journey of Water attraction at EPCOT?
Well, if you plan on cooling off in these water features, there’s one super important rule you need to follow: “Do not use the fountains if you are ill with diarrhea.”
Yes, this is a real rule. And yes, it is posted on signs outside the splash areas.
Look, we get it – no one wants to think about the incidents that led to Disney making this an actual policy, but it’s there for a reason. No one wants contaminated water. No one wants to accidentally step into an unsanitary situation. And let’s be honest, if you’ve got tummy troubles at Disney, the last place you should be is a splash pad.
If you do find yourself sick at Disney, you have options. Disney partners with AdventHealth, and you can set up a virtual doctor’s visit right through the My Disney Experience app. If you need medication, they’ll even deliver it to your resort!
You can also find basic over-the-counter meds at your hotel gift shop, though they’ll be pricier than a regular drugstore. But if you need relief ASAP, it’s good to know that option exists.
As always, we’ll keep an eye on Disney’s policies and bring you the latest updates. Until then, make sure to stay tuned to DFB for more.
