Hey, Netflix, we have a bone to pick with you.
Netflix has spent the past year axing a LOT of shows, many of which only had the opportunity to get one season. As frustrating as this is, many of these shows also seemed pretty popular, leaving folks confused as to why Netflix has decided to cancel them. Well, two MORE popular shows on the streaming service just got the axe, too, and again, we’re left scratching our heads over the decision.
Okay, a few days ago, we got the news from The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix has decided to cancel Kaos after just one season. Who cancels Jeff Goldblum? The series seemed pretty popular and was a hot topic on social media shortly after it premiered due to its modern take on Greek mythology. Jeff Goldblum as Zeus? That should run for MULTIPLE seasons.
What’s confusing about this cancelation, though, is that Kaos also appeared in Netflix’s top 10 charts for English-language series in its first four weeks, eventually landing at #3. It had 14.9 million views over those weeks, but apparently, that’s not enough to convince Netflix that it was a hit. In the U.S., the show had 3.34 million views as of September 8th, per The Hollywood Reporter. The show only premiered in September, but streamers seem to be making hasty decisions about shows whose first seasons don’t immediately do as well as they hoped.
However, The Hollywood Reporter has also reported that another Netflix show was recently canceled. Rob Lowe’s Unstable has also been given its marching orders after two seasons. The show starred Lowe as an eccentric biotechnology company head whose son (portrayed by Lowe’s real son, John Owen Lowe) must save the company and his dad from descending into utter chaos. The series’ second season, which debuted in August, didn’t make the streamer’s top 10 rankings and didn’t show up in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for that month.
The show’s first season premiered in March 2023 and made one appearance in Netflix’s rankings, as well as two appearances on the Nielsen streaming charts.
So far, that brings Netflix to a total of a whopping 10 shows canceled so far in 2024, but the year is still not over and it’s likely we’ll see more in the future.
