We are still in the midst of hurricane season in Florida.
We’ve been following the development of a tropical storm for the past few days, which has now become official. When large storms hit Disney World, they take the necessary precautions to ensure guest safety and continued entertainment. This latest storm may become a hurricane as it nears the Florida coast.
Tropical Storm Debby has become official and is likely to affect the state of Florida. By Monday, the tropical storm will likely produce hurricane conditions along the Florida Big Bend region. A hurricane warning is in effect and tropical storm conditions will begin this evening Sunday, August 4th.
According to the National Hurricane Center, heavy rainfall will likely result in flash and urban flooding across northern Florida through Friday morning. Georgia and South Carolina may also see severe and widespread flash and urban flooding as well as river flooding.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has activated the State Emergency Operations Center due to the incoming storm. The Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard are both “activated to support humanitarian assistance and search and rescue missions.” In a tweet, DeSantis reminds everyone that strong winds, storm surges, and tornadoes can occur before landfall, and outside the forecasted “cone.”
This means that while Orlando and Disney World may not be directly in the path of the hurricane, they will likely be affected by heavy rains and storms.
If you’re flying into Florida, be prepared for flights to be delayed or canceled over the next several days. Keep an eye on your flight’s status and keep in contact with the airline if changes need to be made. We also suggest having proper rain gear with you as you head into the parks. Ponchos, umbrellas, and shoe coverings are great for navigating rainy days in Disney World.
UPDATE: A tornado watch has been posted for most of Central Florida through 8PM August 4th, according to WESH Meteorologist Eric Burris on X.
NEW: Tornado Watch has been posted for just about all of Central Florida through 8pm…
This is as expected- as more and more shear work into our area, brief spin up tornadoes are possible… pic.twitter.com/Sa5RoIBIEt
