Water parks are a great option during the heat of the summer. You can cool off in the clear waters and race down water slides.
Disney World has two different water parks: Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and Disney’s Blizzard Beach (currently closed for the season). We always love a water park day, but we were curious about what goes on behind the scenes. Are there water park horror stories from people who have worked there?
We turned to the experts to see if anyone had a horror story from working at a waterpark. A huge thanks to all of our readers who responded on Facebook, we always love reading through all of your comments. So, let’s see what our water park employees had to say about their time at work! Overall, we discovered that most people did not have horror stories, which is always a good sign! Although a few readers did have some stories to share…
Fucian warned us that, “the water in all water parks is a certain amount of pee, chemicals, and water. Just know there is always pee.” Understood, there will always be pee. Christie also wrote about her time at a water park, with another warning about drinking the water. She wrote, “the kiddie pool was the worst. Kids are gross. Dirty diapers left behind, poop in the water.” The water is definitely not a hydration source, and we will likely be sealing our nose up on our next trip now too.
Besides for the gross water, our readers also mentioned that they ended up rescuing a lot of people. Water parks are a lot of fun but can also be dangerous if the correct precautions are not taken. A huge thanks to every single lifeguard who has ever saved someone’s life! Cat remembered her time at Blizzard Beach in 1998. She wrote, “No horror stories, loved it! I pulled several ppl out of the water and tended to one heat exhaustion, but everyone was ok in the end, thankfully.” Brandon also had experience with pulling people out of the water who realized they couldn’t swim after getting into a 9-foot-deep wave pool, he “made a lot of rescues.”
Our reader also had to deal with misbehaving guests at the water park. Christie remembered teens not acting properly and “drunk people trying to surf down the rides.” Also, since many waterparks are not open year-round, there is often some unwanted visitors when it comes times to reopen. Jill said that there would be “mice everywhere in [her] office when [they would] reopen for the year.” I guess the mice are officially your first guests of the year too!
Even with a few horror stories mixed in, most of the comments we saw mentioned how much our readers loved working at a water park. Hannah did her first Disney College Program at Disney’s Blizzard Beach and “loved every minute of it.” Lori worked at “Typhoon Lagoon in summer 1998 and Blizzard Beach in summer 1999 and loved both!” We also got a comment from Dori who worked at River Country on her Disney College Program 30 years ago. River Country was the first water park at Disney World, and while it has since closed down, we think it is so awesome that she got to work there. She said there were “no horror stories” and she “loved every minute of it!”
We will definitely be extra careful to not swallow any water from the park, and we promise to always be on our best behavior! Thanks again to all our readers who responded, we loved reading through your comments and hearing about your memories working at a water park.
