When it comes to beloved Magic Kingdom rides, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is at the top of the list for many.

Located in Frontierland, the western ghost town-themed coaster is a great choice for those looking for a family-friendly ride. Plus, it’s one of our FAVORITE places to catch the Magic Kingdom fireworks each night. If you’ll be visiting Disney World in January, though, you might not be able to ride the attraction…
According to Disney’s website, Big Thunder Mountain will CLOSE on January 16th for a brief refurbishment.

The good news is that it is set to re-open not even a week later on January 21st.
It’ll re-open soon after!
Planned refurbishments like this are totally normal and are a GOOD THING, as the refurbs are what keep the attractions in tip-top shape and looking (and the tracks feeling) brand new.

So… What can you expect if you’ll be visiting Magic Kingdom during this closure? Well, one less ride can often mean an increase in wait times throughout the park. With Big Thunder closed, there will be no open rides in Frontierland, so the crowds will move elsewhere in the park.

Just be extra patient, and if you’re able to, see if you can fit a ride on Big Thunder into your trip, if it aligns with the days the attraction is set to be open. We’ll continue to keep you updated with more Disney news, so make sure to follow along so that you never miss a thing.
