Finding flights to Orlando can be challenging depending on where you’re flying from.
Orlando International Airport (MCO) is the common destination for those traveling to Disney World, especially those visiting internationally. While you could fly into other locations, MCO is certainly the closest to the Disney World theme parks. Since this is the most common airport for all of us headed to Disney, we think you’re going to like this news regarding a popular airline company!
Southwest Airlines has been making headlines a lot lately. They have made updates to their reward program and announced they plan to add SIX new routes between Orlando and a few tropical destinations in2024–Cancun, Mexico; Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands; Nassau in the Bahamas; Providenciales, Turks and Caicos; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; and San José, Costa Rica.
Now, we have learned that the company intends to add more international flights to the Orlando airport, making it their “international anchor” in the southeast. Chief Operating Officer Andrew Watterson said the airline will be “shifting the bulk of the international service in Fort Lauderdale to Orlando.”
Watterson also mentioned that “this will offer better connectivity in our domestic network via the nearly 140 daily departures at MCO. We are fully committed to delivering on a plan that enables operational excellence, improves operational efficiency.” But we also like to think this will be very beneficial to those who plan to visit Disney World from around the world!
According to the Orlando Sentinel, “A Southwest spokeswoman would not say how the changes will affect flights at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.”
“It made more sense for our international anchor in the Southeast to be Orlando,” Watterson said and we’re happy to hear it. This is a great update that will benefit those traveling the globe and coming to the U.S. to experience Disney World.
