You’ll Never Guess Which ‘Star Wars’ Prop Just Sold for $3 Million

Whether you’re willing to shell out the big bucks on the new Disney-themed car or you’re saving up to purchase the crystal Cinderella Castle model for a cool quarter mil, there are some fans out there that are DEDICATED to the merchandise cause. And that was certainly the case when one Star Wars fanatic purchased one special item for $3.1 MILLION.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, an iconic piece of Star Wars memorabilia was recently auctioned off for $3.135 million. What was the item? It was an “original 20-inch model of an X-wing starfighter used in the climatic space battle in 1977’s Star Wars.”

It was part of the collection of late Oscar-nominated modelmaker Greg Jein, and it had been thought to be lost for decades. The X-wing was recently found in a box in Jein’s garage, and was put up for auction as part of his collection. The sale set a record for the most expensive Star Wars screen-used prop sold at auction.

Built by Industrial Light & Magic for the original Star Wars film, the “Red Leader” X-wing is one of just four “hero” filming miniatures with articulating servo-controlled wings and lights, according to the auction description. Hero models were built for close-up shots and used in the final battle of the movie, including the famous trench run.

So alas, you may have missed out on this sale, but now you know how much it costs to get OG Star Wars props. I guess we better start saving up our change now…we might be able to buy something in about 97 years!
