Nothing can ruin your Disney World vacation faster than a torrential downpour. Okay, we can think of at least one more thing that might be worse than a little rain — we’re talking about a full-blown hurricane.

Disney World is found in sunny Central Florida, which just so happens to see quite a bit of tropical weather — the good and the bad. If you’re heading to the parks this hurricane season, we’re sharing everything you need to know.

Hurricanes Predicted for This Season

The 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1st through November 30th, so whether you’re heading to Disney World during the summer or in the fall, chances are you might need to be prepared for a potential storm. This year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) has predicted “near-normal” activity in the Atlantic.

NOAA predicts a 40% chance of a near-normal season, a 30% chance of an above-normal season, and a 30% chance of a below-normal season. They’ve forecasted a range of 12 to 17 named storms (with winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those storms, 5 to 9 could reach hurricane status (winds of 74 mph or higher), and 1 to 4 could become major hurricanes — categories 3, 4, or 5, with winds of 111 mph or higher.

For the 2023 season, it seems the list of names that will be used is similar to the one that was last used in 2017. But during that year there were some major storms that impacted the United States (Harvey, Irma, and Maria). So some names have been retired and 4 new names are joining the list this year — Harold, Idalia, Margot, and Nigel.

Keep in mind, though, that just because a storm develops doesn’t mean it will impact Disney World. No matter what, it’s important to still be prepared for the potential of a hurricane impact during your trip if you’re visiting during hurricane season.

What We’ve Seen So Far

As we’re only just getting into hurricane season this year, we haven’t seen much in terms of tropical activity in the Atlantic that could impact Disney World. But, we’ve already started to see those summer storms creep up in the parks. Severe weather warnings have been issued, stores and streets have flooded, and Orlando Airport flights have been delayed.

Don’t forget that Orlando is in Central Florida, which typically doesn’t get impacted as much by hurricanes when compared to other areas in Florida, but it can still be affected. In 2022, we saw Disney World close not once, but twice due to storms.

Hurricane Nicole caused Disney World to close in November, and Hurricane Ian wreaked havoc and brought destruction in September. As you may expect, Disney makes sure that its guests are taken care of in the event of a hurricane. When Hurricane Ian caused a multi-day closure in the parks, hotel guests were instructed to stay in their rooms.

Regardless of when you might be planning on heading to Disney World, knowing there’s a possibility that you could see inclement weather can help soften the blow if it does impact your trip.

What You Can Do to Be Prepared

While knowing is half the battle, there are some ways you can be prepared for hurricane season in Disney World. If your trip happens to take place during hurricane season, there are a few extra steps you may want to take to prepare yourself for the worst-case scenario. That starts with planning for rain no matter when you’re visiting. Pack ponchos, umbrellas, rain jackets, and waterproof shoes.

You may also want to consider booking a Disney World hotel that’s better suited for hurricane-like weather. Essentially, we’re talking about hotels with fully enclosed access to restaurants, shops, and the lobby. Luckily, we’ve got a handy list of all the best hotels to stay in during a hurricane!

But most importantly, you’re going to want to mentally prepare yourself and manage the expectations of those in your group. Disney World has earned a reputation through several major hurricanes as a safe, secure place to be during a hurricane. That said, the parks and resorts will look a little different in the event of an emergency. Even after the storm, attractions may be shut down and restaurants may be closed.

But, if you do decide to cancel your trip, here’s what you need to know — the Disney World website states:

“If a hurricane warning is issued by the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area—or for your place of residence—within 7 days of your scheduled arrival date, you may call in advance to reschedule or cancel your Walt Disney Travel Company Disney Resort Hotel Package and most room-only reservations (booked directly with Disney) without any cancellation or change fees imposed by Disney.”
