If you’re flying in or out of Orlando International Airport soon, there’s something you’ve gotta know.
Frontier Airlines announced a merge with Spirit about a year ago, but JetBlue didn’t give up on buying Spirit to create an even larger airline. Not only would this make the budget airline larger, but it means that certain airports like MCO would see a HUGE influx of flights.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, JetBlue’s chief executive officer Robin Hayes said that “combining the two airlines will give travelers a more credible alternative to American, Delta, Southwest, and United” on Friday.
This acquisition will create the fifth-largest airline in the U.S., and some travel experts have expressed concern that it will “reduce competition and push fares higher in Florida’s key destination markets.”
This month, Spirit has scheduled an average of 92 daily departures from MCO Airport while JetBlue has scheduled around 53. Combining these two airlines together, if approved, means that it would outperform Southwest, Delta, and United, and also offer MCO passengers more low-cost options.
A successful merger will need to be approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration and could begin as early as 2025. If you’re planning a Disney World trip in the next few years, this is important to keep in mind as you look at flight options. Be sure to stay tuned to DFB for all the latest MCO Airport news!
