If you want to buy new Disney merchandise, there are a few different ways to do it. You can visit a Disney park to find all kinds of items in gift shops, head to shopDisney (Disney’s official online store), or find Disney collections through other sites like Amazon. But soon there could be a NEW way to get the merchandise you want.
Disney is working on a new system to link merchandise to its Disney+ streaming service. Some of that merchandise could even be exclusive to Disney+ subscribers. Learn more about this potential new system and when it could start here.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Disney is currently developing a system to “enable subscribers to its Disney+ streaming service to buy merchandise associated with some of its shows by scanning a code on the service.” This is meant to link Disney products and services together in order to boost sales.
For example, while watching the new Marvel show She Hulk: Attorney at Law, you might be able to scan a code on the screen to purchase some She Hulk merchandise. Disney hasn’t explained the details of this new system, so it’s not clear whether the link would take you to shopDisney, straight to the check-out page for the merchandise, or somewhere else.
Some of the merchandise might be exclusive to Disney+ subscribers, meaning you can’t buy it unless you watch the associated Disney+ show. Disney executives mentioned potentially offering “an exclusive toy version of a ‘darksaber’—a weapon from the Star Wars-themed series The Mandalorian—for sale only to Disney+ subscribers” (WSJ).
This new feature could be introduced as early as this year, although no official starting date has been announced.
Disney CEO Bob Chapek has been “vocal both internally and publicly about the opportunity for Disney to do more to cross-sell to customers.” By linking the streaming service to merchandise sales, Disney will combine 2 major money-makers for the company.
The senior executive vice president and chief communications officer at Disney, Kristina Schake, said, “Technology is giving us new ways to customize and personalize the consumer experience so that we are delivering entertainment, experiences and products that are most relevant to each of our guests.”
