Tokyo Disneyland opened up back in 1983, and many of its opening day attractions are still running to this day!
The resort recently celebrated its 800 millionth (!!) guest, opened up a brand new immersive Toy Story Hotel, and even debuted a new Beauty and the Beast ride a few years ago. But, the changes aren’t done yet — now Tokyo Disneyland is gearing up to refurbish an iconic Disney attraction and land that’s been around since the park first opened!
Tokyo Disneyland just announced that Space Mountain and its surrounding area in Tokyo Disneyland will CLOSE in 2024 to make way for a new Tomorrowland Plaza!
The refurbishment will keep many of the aspects that guests know and love about Space Mountain, but according to Disney, the new version of the ride will have “enhanced performance and immersive special effects that will give guests even more thrills on this exciting rocket ride.”
And, it’s not just changes to the actual ride that are planned — the plaza surrounding the ride in Tomorrowland is also getting an update! Once complete, Disney says that the new plaza will “express the connection between Earth and the universe, representing an image of a future where humans are in harmony with nature.” It will include spaces for guests to rest and relax during their busy park day and will feature a “spectacular world of light and soundscapes” in the evenings.
Owen Yoshino (the Senior Creative Director for Walt Disney Imagineering) revealed that the changes are meant to “spread awareness of caring for our Earth and what she’s gifted us throughout time as we know it.”
All of the refurbishments are expected to be completed in 2027. So, it may be a few years before we get to ride the newest (or at least the most recently renovated) Space Mountain, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for all the latest updates! And, in the meantime, be sure to stay tuned to DFB for more of the latest Disney news and updates!
