Disney+ Day is just a few days away, but we’ve already gotten some BIG news about Disney’s popular streaming service.
We’ve gotten a look at the NEW shows and movies that will be released on that day, special perks that Disney+ subscribers can get in the parks, and more. But, today we got some more news about Disney+ — specifically about just how many MILLIONS of subscribers they have now!
Today, Disney held its fiscal full year and Q4 2021 earnings call and provided updates on its financial situation. Amongst all of the financial news, Disney also shared its updated Disney+ subscriber numbers.
Back in April of 2020, Disney+ had 50 million subscribers. By March of 2021, the service had surpassed 100 million subscribers. During the most recent update, in August of 2021, Disney shared that the streaming service had a total of 116 million subscribers.
Now, we’ve got an update. As of October 2nd, 2021, Disney+ has 118.1 million subscribers. WOW! That number is up 60% from the number in October of 2020, when the service had 73.7 million subscribers.
Back in December of 2020, Disney announced that they were projecting to have 230-260 million subscribers by the end of Fiscal Year 2024, with Disney+ achieving profitability that year. It seems Disney+ is certainly on its way toward that goal.
So, with Disney+ having 118.1 million subscribers, ESPN+ 17.1 million, and Hulu 43.1 million, Disney’s streaming services now have a total of 179 million subscriptions combined.
Some analysts have suggested that Disney+ will have more subscribers than Netflix by 2025. But, others have had their concerns about Disney+ and its ability to acquire more subscribers. Only time will tell how the service ultimately performs. We broke down the difference between Disney+ and Netflix’s subscriber numbers below — which service do you prefer?
