The COVID-19 pandemic impacted a number of different industries around the world, caused Disney World and Disney’s theme parks around the world to close, and delayed a number of projects that were set to come to its parks and resorts.
One the projects that ended up getting delayed was the premiere of Cirque du Soleil’s new show, “Drawn to Life,” which was set to debut in Disney Springs in the spring of 2020. But, now things have started to change. Disney World is increasing capacity, the COVID-19 vaccine is available to more individuals, Broadway is set to reopen later this year, and various other rules and regulations have changed in the movie theater industry and more. So, what’s going on with Cirque du Soleil and what could it mean for their Disney World show? Here’s what we know.
Recently, Cirque du Soleil CEO Daniel Lamarre’s spoke with CNBC’s Squawk on the Street team. During that interview, Lamarre indicated that there has been a HUGE jump in ticket sales for Cirque’s upcoming shows!
Lamarre specifically said, “Every day we sell the double-digit number of tickets that we used to sell on normal days.”
CNBC notes that Cirque du Soleil is currently preparing for the re-opening of two of their Las Vegas shows, “Mystere” and “O,” which are set to reopen in June and July. The company also owns Blue Man Group, which is preparing to reopen in Las Vegas in June.
Lamarre noted that Cirque will reopen internationally in markets where there is a high level of people who have been vaccinated against COVID-19. He also shared that the company will vaccinate all cast and crew members.
The company reportedly remained contact with about 95% of its former artists and plans to rehire many of them once shows begin reopening.
With the advent of their digital platform CirqueConnect, Cirque du Soleil has been able to increase engagement and interest in the company’s work. Lamarre noted that they have reached 62 million viewers around the world through their platform and shares that this progress shows there is a market for them outside of just live entertainment.
So, what’s going on with “Drawn to Life” in Disney Springs? As we mentioned, Drawn to Life was originally set to debut in early 2020. That was then delayed by the pandemic.
A new opening date has not yet been announced; and tickets are currently unavailable via the Cirque du Soleil website. When you visit the website, it simply notes that the show will be coming soon and it allows you to sign up to receive notifications about an upcoming opening date.
But, we have seen some news shared about the show over the last few months. In April, Lamarre mentioned that Cirque is working on a new opening date for Drawn to Life and that they “should be able to open sometime in the fall.”
The huge jump in ticket sales for Cirque’s returning shows is undoubtedly a good sign for the company. It could give them the push of energy (and money) they may need to continue to reopen more shows very soon!
We’ll be sure to look for more information about Cirque du Soleil’s upcoming Disney Springs show and let you know as we find any updates. Stay tuned to DFB for all the latest Disney news!
