Cake takes MANY forms in Disney World, from the mile-high slices at Gideon’s Bakehouse to beautifully decorated Disney Princess cakes.

Katsura Grill
It goes without saying, though, that not EVERY cake in Disney World is gonna be a hit, as is clearly evidenced by a pair of two new cakes we tried in EPCOT, and spoiler alert: we wished we only ordered one of them!
When we’re craving Japanese food in EPCOT, Katsura Grill is a frequent fixture for us, but we usually stick to savory fare.
But today, our sweet tooth couldn’t be denied, and we sprang for a couple cake slices that sounded refreshingly light and spring-y! The result: a tale of two TOTALLY different desserts!
First, the good stuff! The Yuzu Cheesecake tasted as good as it looks!
It’s a tangy, creamy, and sweet cheesecake infused with Japanese citrus on a graham cracker crust, drizzled with strawberry sauce, and it was FAB!
It mostly had a pleasant lemon-y flavor, and if you’re a fan of a well-made cheesecake or citrus-y stuff, this will be right up your alley. And at $5, it’s also a good price!
Now pardon us while we dial down the enthusiasm for dessert number two…the Mousse Cake. It’s a standard-looking white cake with a thin layer of vanilla cream in the middle, a chocolate mousse-type layer on top, and a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Yeah, it tasted as basic as it sounds.
Firstly, we were confused as to what made this “Japanese,” and what this was doing at Katsura Grill. There didn’t seem to be any Japanese flavors here, and for a mousse dessert, we’d expect more moistness and fluffiness at least. It also REALLY needs more mousse, and frankly a BETTER mousse (the chocolate stuff on top gets kinda hard when it’s pre-sliced and left in the fridge).
If you’re looking for a straightforward cake slice, or you have kids with picky palates, this could work for you, otherwise it’s not nearly as exciting or flavorful as other desserts in EPCOT. Plus, the $6 price tag seems a tad steep for what you get.
So the next time our sweet tooth takes us to Japan, we think we’ll stick with the cheesecake!
