While the Disney Parks around the world have started to reopen to guests, Disney Cruise Line has remained closed as a health and safety precaution.
Since the CDC has extended cruise line’s closures through September (and could continue to extend the date), Disney hasn’t set plans for departures until Fall 2021. While this is the current situation, officials at Port Canaveral are looking to the future.
Port Canaveral has gathered a budget plan for 2021. This plan states that there will be no cruises from the port until at least January 2021. And at that time, they predict that only “four ships would be sailing at 50% capacity — one ship each.” The port is home to five brands, though, including Disney Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises. Which brands would be sailing is unclear at this time.
The Port Authority voting won’t take place until September, but the proposed 50% sailing restriction would last through the fiscal year starting October 1st, 2020, and ending September 30th, 2021. However, more ships would be allowed per cruise to set sail each quarter. While the Port Authority hopes that cruising may begin again before January, it really relies on when they get the OK from the CDC.
There have been major budget cuts during this time, and the only major project happening through 2021 will be the construction on Disney Cruise’s Cruise Terminal 8. The $25.5 million funds needed for the revamp were set aside and approved back in February. The recent Port Authority meeting states that they expect to make substantial completion on the terminal by April 16th, 2021.
As the Port Authority and CDC continue to make decisions based on the health and safety of employees and passengers, we’ll keep you updated on the Disney Cruise Line’s closure.
