Although Florida public schools remained closed through the end of the spring semester, some Florida universities are already inching towards re-opening.
No official dates have been announced yet, but select universities are planning on re-opening for the Fall 2020 semester.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, certain Florida public universities are planning to re-open for the fall semester, but it isn’t clear to what extent they will be operating. Next month, the Board of Governors is scheduled to meet and decide the full plan for the Florida fall semester.
The Board of Governors oversees the twelve Florida public campuses and is working on individual plans for each campus. The Board will compile “overarching guidelines” for universities by May 28th, then each campus will submit their individual plans by June 23rd.
The University of Central Florida is starting to show early signs of re-opening with some employees returning to work as early as June 1st and the privately-owned housing complex, UnionWest, plans to re-open as well. Researchers using UCF’s labs were able to return to work this month.
The University of Florida has several groups working to plan the school’s re-opening while addressing health and financial concerns. A spokesman stated, “We know that students are very eager to come back this fall,” he said. “We fully anticipate that whatever form fall takes, we will have students in Gainesville, so we need to be prepared for that.”
Some universities, like those in California, have already announced plans to remain largely online this fall, but universities across the country are still looking to the evolving data for how to proceed with the fall semester.
