A group of Texas theme parks are requesting to reopen to guests as soon as possible.
The Texas Travel Alliance, led by SeaWorld, Fiesta Texas, and the San Antonio Zoo, released a proposal requesting to reopen as early as this weekend.
As reported by News 4 San Antonio, The Texas Travel Alliance, which includes popular destinations such as SeaWorld, Fiesta Texas, and the San Antonio Zoo, has called on the governor to allow for the reopening of their businesses. According to Texas Travel Alliance President & CEO Dan Decker, over 1.2 million Texans work in the travel and tourism industry.
The group put forth a plan which requested reopening as soon as May 16th at 25% capacity. The plan also includes a progressive increase of capacity up to 50% by May 22nd. The proposal requests that individuals without symptoms be allowed to visit and work at parks with required face coverings and physical distancing.
The group argued that tourist destinations like theme parks and zoos are different than public mass gatherings because capacity can be reduced, guests rarely sit or stand in a single location for extended amounts of time, and many who attend are members of the same household. They also said they would implement extra sanitation procedures and employee training. Currently, the proposal has not yet been approved by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
