We were thrilled to share the news that Shanghai Disneyland will reopen on May 11th! And while that is indeed exciting, it remains true that other Disney Parks and destinations around the world remain closed until further notice due to the current global health situation.
However, we are starting to learn more about what the guest experience may look like in the Disney parks, thanks to a message from Disney regarding measures currently under consideration for a reopening that is safe for both guests and cast members. As we explore what the “new normal” might include, we’re turning our attention to one Florida location that will be reopening later this month: the Florida Aquarium in Tampa.
Disney and the Florida Aquarium are, of course, two very different venues. That said, as the aquarium sets plans in motion for a May 15th reopening, it is interesting to note some of the ways that detailed safety measures will be implemented, according to the information currently posted on flaquarium.org.
Guest Capacity
Disney has stated that capacity measures are currently being explored for the parks. It has already been announced that Shanghai Disneyland will require tickets to be purchased in advance prior to arrival (and that a reservation system will be in place for Annual Passholders).
And the Florida Aquarium is also utilizing a required reservation-only system, with online reservations available starting Thursday, May 7th (a phone number has also been provided for members without online access). The website states that hourly capacity will be limited in order to provide social distancing. Additionally, groups will be limited to 8 tickets.
Physical Distancing
The website states that floor graphics in the entry area will help guests stay 6 feet apart, and a one-way path will be utilized throughout the aquarium.
“Touch Experiences” will not be available for activities like Stingray Beach; however, guests will still be able to visit and view the exhibits. The Outdoor Play Space, which includes a Splash Pad, will not be available. Guests are advised that no stroller or wheelchairs will be available to rent. Seating will be limited for food service areas, as will the number of guests allowed in the gift shop. And it is expressed that water fountains will not be available, noting that guests may bring their own water or buy single-serve drinks.
Protective Equipment
Disney mentioned new training and reinforcement will be put in place for Cast Members in order to promote safety. Measures being implemented by the Aquarium include the requiring of face masks for staff and volunteers, who will also undergo a temperature check each morning. Guests will be “strongly encouraged” to wear masks.
Hand sanitizer stations will be increased in number and will be located throughout the aquarium including the exit, entry, and restrooms.
Cleanliness
While Disney is still exploring the measures for increasing cleaning and disinfecting, the Aquarium has stated it will “maintain its high standards of cleanliness” and cites high-touch surfaces such as windows, railings, restrooms, and elevators will receive cleaning “continuously.”
We have been following guidelines as they are currently being considered for various businesses throughout Florida, and it is interesting to learn how companies are prioritizing the safety of both visitors and their staff.
