While both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort remain closed until further notice due to the current global health situation, both home states for the Resorts are looking at safe reopenings for their economies.
We have been following along with the Re-Open Florida Task Force and Florida’s Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force, especially with regards to discussions that touch on the path to reopening Walt Disney World. In California — where Anaheim, of course, is home to Disneyland Resort — Governor Gavin Newsom is also laying out plans for the state’s businesses.
The Orange County Register reports that Governor Newsom — together with California Department of Public Health Director Dr. Sonia Angell — presented a “four-stage road map” for California’s reopening.
It is important to note, as mentioned in The Orange County Register, that “Newsom did not explicitly mention theme parks in his four-stage plan.” However, the article discusses each of the four stages of reopening, and where the state’s theme parks potentially fit.
Stage 1 reflects the current stage for California as stay-at-home orders remain in place.
Stage 2, which is quoted in the article as “weeks” away, would permit “Lower Risk” places of work including retail, offices, and schools to reopen “with adaptions.”
Stage 3, which may be “months” away, would include the reopening of businesses and gatherings classified as “Higher Risk” where close contact is likely to occur. Examples include gyms, theaters, and salons as well as church services (including events like weddings). Again, the phrase “with adaptions” was shared with regards to these types of businesses.
Stage 4 would see the reopening of events classified as “Highest Risk,” including concerts and live audience sports among the examples. Dr. Angell is noted as sharing that entering Stage 4 would require therapeutics (which do not currently exist). She is also quoted as saying: “This is going to be a while, but there are ways we can modify the way we move around in our environment that will make it more possible (to reopen).”
A quote from the article recognizes that: “Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood, Knott’s Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain, SeaWorld San Diego, Legoland California and other theme parks in the state would appear to fall into Stage 4 — the last phase of the plan.” However, it was also expressed that some of the state’s theme parks “could fall into the earlier Stage 3 if they adopt substantial operational changes that promote social distancing and other health and safety measures.”
