By now you’ve gotten your tastebuds excited to try Pym Test Kitchen’s new shrunken and expanded foods, while Pym Tasting Lab’s beer cocktails and hard seltzer offerings should have you as thirstier than Thor himself!
But whether you’re new to the Marvel universe or have been anticipating the Avengers Campus grand opening for some time, we have even more info to share with you about the story behind this new land opening in Disney California Adventure of July 18th!
Avengers Campus isn’t set in a mythological time and place like some of Disney’s other recent undertakings such as Onward, Frozen, or the Star Wars franchise. Instead of us going to them, the Avengers are being transported to OUR world!
Anchored by Iron Man, a.k.a. Tony Stark of Stark Enterprises, the retrofitted headquarters of the Avengers Campus was once an automotive shop owned by Tony’s late father and it will feature a life-size Quinjet atop its roof!
It’s here at Disney California Adventure where superheroes from “across time and space” will be able to assemble in an effort to seek out heroes among us and train us to fight by their side!
And we know you’re probably asking yourself, “Didn’t Tony Stark die in The Avengers: Endgame?” Avengers Campus seems to be headlined by a Tony Stark of a different timeframe — in fact, you can even meet the lovable billionaire sporting a new Mark 80 Iron Man suit, so let’s just chalk this reasoning up to one of Marvel’s multiverse-y type situations. If we spot Doctor Strange, we might have to ask him what’s up with this.
During your time at Avengers Campus, each Marvel character you encounter will offer up a lesson in their specialized area of expertise.
In Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Attraction, Peter Parker (portrayed by actor Tom Holland) has invented the mechanism to give ordinary folks such as ourselves web flinging capabilities while Doctor Strange will teach us the ways of the Mystic Arts in his Sanctum during a stage show.
But what really got us excited about the new Avengers Campus is how it’ll tie in with one of our favorite Disney California Adventure attractions, Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout!
Formerly Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, the ride received its Marvel-themed overlay in 2017. The premise of the attraction is based around The Collector, Taneleer Tivan (played by Benicio del Toro in movie).
Story Development Lead Jillian Pagan, shared with IGN today how The Collector’s presence will be felt throughout the new Avengers Campus, “You will see the disruption that Tivan’s fortress has caused to the Campus. As you go through the different addresses of the Campus, you’ll see that his fortress has kind of melted the old tunnels that you’re going through.”
Pagan went on to state, “There will be some tension of, [the Avengers are] still checking him out, they’re still taking a look at what he’s doing, but he essentially came and said, ‘Hey, you’re trying to train the next generation of heroes. What better way to prepare them for the cosmos and what’s out there than my cosmic collection?'”
“Meanwhile, we know The Collector, we know his style. Is he potentially here to capture some heroes, say the Guardians of the Galaxy, say The Avengers, say potentially some of the recruits that are wandering into his fortress? Is he scamming us? That’s always been the underlying story with him, and now we can fully manifest that.” Pagan concluded.
Pagan says Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout won’t be altered when Avengers Campus opens, but instead the original monologue given by The Collector in the ride’s pre-show in which he says, “I’m inviting you in today to see my most recent acquisitions, The Guardians of the Galaxy” will infer he’s just acquired the heroes from the Avengers Campus — where they’ll be roaming along with other Marvel characters.
We can’t wait to see how Guardians of the Galaxy’s: Mission Breakout correlates to Avengers Campus for ourselves when the new Marvel land opens this summer!
