AAAARRRR ye ready, mateys, to see The Beak and Barrel? Then let’s step inside…
The Story Behind The Beak and Barrel
As the story goes… a legendary pirate rumrunner called Captain Meridian “Merry” Goldwyn established this “lively pirate pub,” now known as The Beak and Barrel! Rummy, her first mate, is the tavern’s quartermaster keeping an eye on the lounge from a roost at the top.
He’s retired from his adventures on the sea but likes to make sure the space is in tip-top shape and loves to share his tale while leading the bar in a few toasts! (Prior to The Beak and Barrel’s opening, Disney had teased that Barker Bird, a parrot once located at the entrance of Pirates of the Caribbean, would return, and shares that “Rummy bears a striking resemblance to the original Barker Bird that previously sat at the entrance to Pirates of the Caribbean but flew the coop some time ago.”)
The Atmosphere of The Beak and Barrel
Let’s enter the various areas of The Beak and Barrel…
The Mess
The main dining room, or The Mess, which was once a mess hall for Spanish soldiers, now welcomes guests with long tables “allowing for pirates to gather ‘round and tell their own tales,” and an anchor filled with candles above.
When you enter, you might notice the Enchanted Rum Bottle, which Merry received as a gift from the Enchantress Tia Dalma (a character from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise).
It now “serves as the source of the tavern’s specialty brews.” As legend has it, as long as the bottle stays full, the pub will never run out of drink!
The space also features a large bar “cobbled together from salvaged portions of a cursed shipwreck” and a skull-shaped stern showcases an assortment of grogs and brew.
Also, don’t miss out on spying the treasures the pirates have looted and brought into the lounge.
Take notice of the ship’s bell, too. Disney shares, “Rumor has it this bell was from Captain Redd’s first ship, gifted to Merry at the tavern’s founding.”
Some say “they’re close friends, or perhaps fierce rivals…”
The Captains’ Quarters
An additional room, the Captains’ Quarters, invites guests to ” enjoy a taste of the finer life” in this space which once served as the living quarters of the Spanish Comandante.
The Quarters are bedecked with fine artwork and drapery (which also happens to be brandished with burn marks and sword slashes by other rumbunctious pirates over the years).
Other signs of pirate wear include faded markings on the wall where plundered portraits once hung. Each one of the four Grand Booths in the Captains’ Quarters are hand-carved and tell a different story about all the pirate lords, and each is representative of a different pirate ideal: adventure, freedom, fortune, and unity.
Imagineers who worked on the lounge each have different favorite spots of the hand carved panels:
- David, the Story Lead Imagineer for The Beak and Barrel, loves Jack Sparrow’s battle with the Kraken
- Kelsey, Senior Interior Designer, loves the panel that’s full of riches
- Mackenzie, the Graphic Designer, loves the detailing of the Pirate Lords
- Jessica, the Interior Designer, loves the panel that depicts freedom aboard a ship
Above the fireplace are five miniature ships in bottles representing pirates from different parts of the world who came together in attempts to defeat tyranny. But beware!
“These mysterious bottles have been known to come alive and engage in a fearsome battle.” (This reminds us of Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto, where the whole room becomes interactive with different moving elements and sounds when you order certain drinks.)
There is also a Private Sitting Room tucked into the Captain’s Quarters.
The Mapmaker’s Room
To the left of the main bar, you can see where the pirates fired cannonballs in order to get into the Mapmaker’s Room.
The room had been locked, so pirates had to blast their way in!
You can still spot cannonballs in the walls and debris from their entry.
The Beak and Barrel Menu
This family-friendly lounge features “tasty options for pirates of all ages — as well as refreshing cocktails for Guests ages 21 and up.”
In the food items, you may pick up on spices that come from all around the world found in pirate travels! And drinks are served in different vessels, having been collected during adventures along the way.
