Chances are that if you’re reading this, you love a good theme park ride. But what you probably don’t love is getting stuck on theme park rides.
A situation like this can easily turn what’s supposed to be a fun day into an unfortunate one, which is exactly what happened to a group of people earlier this week. Recently, riders were left stranded 202 feet in the air after a roller coaster got stuck mid-ride at a theme park in Australia, according to People.
Parkgoers at the Warner Bros. Movie World theme park on Australia’s Gold Coast certainly didn’t have the trip they were expecting on April 8th, when they were left stranded 202 feet in the air on the DC Rivals Hypercoaster.
The ride is known as the “tallest, longest, and fastest HyperCoaster in the Southern Hemisphere,” and features an 89-degree drop. The passengers were stuck on the steep incline just before the drop at around 1 PM local time, with temperatures up to 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
Footage was uploaded to Facebook by visitor Shane Treloar after he noticed the ride had stopped in an unexpected spot. In the video, Shane says, “See that rollercoaster? That is stuck. Sucks to be them. If you can see there, they’ve got umbrellas, and there’s a guy at the top talking to them. There’s someone halfway going up to rescue people.”
Park employees handed out umbrellas to the stuck riders, as they were in the blazing full sun at the time.
A spokesperson for the Village Roadshow Theme Parks, which operates Warner Bros. Movie World, told People that there was a “stoppage” on the coaster due to a “ride sensor activation.” They added that all guests were safe and team members were in “constant communication” with them before being evacuated from the “safe stop zones” on the ride.
The DC Rivals Hypercoaster travels up to 71 miles per hour and is 202 feet tall at its highest point. “The safety and well-being of our guests is our highest priority,” the spokesperson said.
While it’s certainly no fun to be stuck on a theme park ride, the most important thing to remember is to stay calm and wait for directions from park employees. Rides are designed with safety procedures in mind in case of situations like this, and once it was determined safe for passengers to be evacuated from the ride, they were. If you ever find yourself in a situation like this, just remember to wait for employees instructions. It may take a while, but eventually, you will be rescued!
