We seriously always look forward to visiting the Jardin de Fiestas Outdoor Kitchen at the EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival.
Why? Well, for two reasons. First, Jardin de Fiestas has a tradition of serving up menus of entirely new eats and drinks each year. And second, this booth is nearly always a contender (and often a winner) for our Best of the Fest list! So, as we make our way around EPCOT to review every single Flower and Garden Festival Food Booth for you, we hope you’ll join us in the Mexico Pavilion to see if Jardin de Fiestas lives up to its great reputation once again!
Menu
In keeping with its unique Festival tradition, Jardin de Fiestas boasts three new food items this year: Chilaquiles con Carne, the Taco de Calamar, and Flan de la Abuela.
The featured beverages are new as well, with the Flower Power Margarita and the Spicy Mango Margarita. Beer drinkers can enjoy a Craft Mexican Draft Beer, as well.
Ready? Here we go…
Eats
First up is the new Chilaquiles con Carne for $8.50. It’s made with corn tortillas tossed in salsa ranchera and Monterey Jack with shaved rib-eye, poblano peppers, onions, queso fresco, and crema mexicana. Y’all. Just WOW. This really surprised us. The way the corn tortilla just soaks up all those flavors was MAGICAL. But all the elements were done so well. The rib-eye was super tender. Now, the corn tortillas get a little mushy with all those toppings, but we didn’t mind one bit.
The Taco de Calamar is unlike anything featured at this booth before, featuring a flour tortilla filled with crispy calamari. It’s garnished with fried garlic, pasilla aïoli, and chives for $9. Well, we’ve got some bad news. This baby is a big letdown. We love calamari, but this was over-cooked and chewy, not even crispy. It couldn’t even be saved by the aïoli. This dish needs a lot more thought put into it because it just wasn’t working for us.
And for dessert? The Flan de Abuela is $6.50. It’s a creamy hazelnut-chocolate flan with vanilla crème anglaise. Now, this was another surprise for us, in a good way. It almost reminded us of a pudding cup, but you’ve got that interesting hazelnut flavor that comes through. This is a great flan for someone who’s never had flan before and might be a little wary of trying it.
We also appreciated that the flan is nice and light, especially after eating so many heavy things during the festival.
The Flower Power Margarita is a fun reflection of the Festival’s theme in beverage form! This new cocktail features Dulce Vida Blanco Tequila, orange-pineapple juice, blackcurrant-lavender liqueur, and Empress 1908 Gin with a rose petal flower salt rim for $15. Okay, we have to be honest here, this tasted like what we think potpourri would taste like. It’s VERY floral, and that’s going to turn some folks off. It’s still refreshing, but we would have appreciated more of the orange and pineapple flavors.
The Spicy Mango Margarita is also up for grabs for $14.75. It combines 100% de agave blanco tequila, reposado mezcal, tamarindo liqueur, mango purée, and lime-jalapeño juice with a chili-lime salt rim. Now this was a smoky and sweet drink we could get behind. Like the other drink, it packs a punch, but you don’t really realize it until you’ve been drinking it for a hot minute.
A Craft Mexican Draft Beer is also available for $6.25 for 6 ounces and 11.50 for 12 ounces.
OVERALL
Well, we have to admit that not everything was a big win for us at this booth, like it has been in the past. We would come back for the chilaquiles, flan, and spicy mango margarita, but everything else was kind of a disappointment. This booth usually turns up with all the winners, but that’s just not the case this year.
