Disney World Resort food courts…you either love ’em or hate ’em.
Some are arguably better than others (we’re not exactly raving about the dining options at the All-Star Resorts), but when you’re in a bind, they’re often available with some crowd-pleasing and occasionally exclusive dining options. Recently, we made a visit to Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory at Port Orleans Resort — French Quarter, and here we’ve rounded up our thoughts on the experience!
Atmosphere
Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory is located in the main building of the French Quarter, right next door to our beloved Mickey beignets at Scat Cat’s Club — Cafe. Like the rest of the French Quarter, the restaurant has a Mardi Gras theme.
Disney World’s Value Resorts and Moderate Resorts all have food court-style dining options, and this is very similar to the others in its setup. When you first enter, you’ll find the various food “stalls” where you can order different types of cuisine.
There are also plenty of grab-and-go options like bottled drinks, prepackaged salads, chips, fruit, and candy.
Once you’ve got your meal, you’ll check out at one of the registers. There, you can pick up your drink cups.
For drinks, they have beverage stations with a few different options like soda, coffee, tea, and juice. The French Quarter is one of the few hotels home to a Coca-Cola Freestyle machine. This is also where you’ll find utensils, napkins, and some condiments.
Then, we’ve got the seating. It’s pretty open, mostly consisting of classic tables and chairs. The views out the windows here are pretty lovely, though!
But enough about the restaurant — what’s on the menu here?!
Menu
You’ll visit a different ordering stall at the restaurant depending on what you want to eat. One option has selections with various burgers and sandwiches, such as Jerk BBQ Chicken or a Beef and Fried Shrimp Burger.
For a healthier option, you can go to the Create-Your-Own Entree station. Here, you select a protein and choose two sides. This is a great spot if you’ve got a hankering for a vegetable.
The Italian station has pasta and pizza, as well as Shrimp and Grits (random to put that over here, but I digress). Each station also offers a couple of kids’ meals.
Then, there’s the regular Entrees station with items that are more signature to this resort. This is where you can get both the Jambalaya and the Gumbo.
Of course, we wouldn’t have a complete menu without dessert. The dessert area has seasonal sweets, ice cream, brownies, and cookies.
And now, onto the main event — the food!
Eats
We started our meal with the Jambalaya for $12.49. This is one of AJ’s favorites, so we were hyped to have it again and see if it still lives up to its name.
This had a LOT of chicken and sausage with a moderate Cajun seasoning in the rice. It’s service with a piece of cornbread that was fairly sweet yet a little dry.
We’d consider this mildly spicy, but there’s not too much of a kick overall. The onions, bell peppers, and celery inside were all cooked until soft, and the tomato sauce flavor is the strongest element. We found the sauce to be just a little bit too runny today, but we’d definitely order this again!
Next up, we’ve got another classic, the Gumbo for $10.99. This one’s made with chicken and okra.
This was a bit less spicy than the Jambalaya, but still had a decent Cajun seasoning to it. The rice was thick and cooked thoroughly, and there was a wonderful rice-to-gumbo ratio here. The fresh okra was a smidge on the slimy side, but that was less noticeable when eaten with the rest of the dish. We’d order this again, too, but probably pick the Jambalaya over it.
The third entree we snagged was the Shrimp Po’ Boy for $14.49. This is made with fried shrimp, rèmoulade sauce (a mayo sauce with Cajun seasoning), and French fries on the side.
This was made fresh after we ordered it, so it took a minute, but honestly, it was worth it for the quality! The shrimp are salty with some Cajun seasoning (got a lot of that going on at this restaurant), and the breading was crispy and hot. Lettuce and tomato add some fresh flavors to the sandwich, and the remoulade gave everything a spicy kick while still being creamy. The bread was nice and soft, and this was a very filling portion with the classic Disney fries on the side.
Finally, we wrapped up our meal with dessert, which was the seasonal cheesecake flavor! Right now, they’ve got Strawberry Cheesecake for $6.29. This has a strawberry filling in the middle and a cute little Mickey Mouse sugar cookie on top.
This was sweet and light, super soft with a good cream cheese flavor and smooth texture. The strawberry filling was tart but not overpowering. Everything was so soft that it fell apart when we cut into it, and the strawberry filling poured out like a lava cake. This was good, but not really something we’d recommend going out of your way for.
So how did Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory stack up?
Nosh or Not
This Disney World restaurant is a must-visit if…
- You’re staying at the French Quarter and need a quick meal! This is the main quick service spot at the hotel that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. While you can get beignets next door or some eats at the pool bar, this has a fuller menu.
- You’re craving some Louisiana classics. The Cajun fare here is actually pretty decent compared to quick service options in Disney World, which makes this one of the better food courts at the hotels. AJ even goes out of her way to go order that Jambalaya!
You should skip this Disney World spot if…
- You have other plans for the day than staying at the resort. While the food here is decent, we wouldn’t exactly recommend it over some of the more exciting options in the theme parks. Even if you’re doing an off day from the parks, the French Quarter is a short boat ride away from Disney Springs, where there are some amazing restaurants.
- You have time or money for a sit-down meal, and it’s dinnertime. If you have the capability to do a sit-down meal, we really love Scat Cat’s Club — Lounge for dinner, or Boatwright’s Dining Hall at Port Orleans — Riverside next door.
Overall
Ultimately, Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory makes a really good standing among the food court-style restaurants in Disney World. With unique menu items and a less chaotic atmosphere, this is a truly decent fast option if you’re staying at this hotel. We’d go back again to get that Jambalaya or Gumbo, and even the Shrimp Po’ Boy!
