I go to Disney World for the rides. Yes, yes, I love trying new snacks that become new favorites and watching Disney’s nighttime spectaculars, which usually end with me in tears (I swear Happily Ever After was made to have you cry, okay?), but there’s something about the rides that always keeps me coming back time and time again.
I’ve been on just about every ride at Disney World (okay, admittedly, I haven’t been on Astro Orbiters yet, but I have been at Disneyland, and that should count for something), but there are some I avoid at all costs — including the beloved Slinky Dog Dash.
If you’ve ever been to Toy Story Land at Hollywood Studios, you’ve probably noticed how there is barely an ounce of shade and that it’s the hottest place on the planet. Maybe not the hottest on the planet, but I swear it feels 10 degrees hotter in Toy Story Land than it does in other places around the park. Of course, Slinky Dog Dash is in this super hot area.
Have you seen the queue? That thing is HOT! While there is some shade coverage, the air feels still, and when you’re standing in place for a bit, trust me, you’ll feel the heat, especially since Disney World has about 10 hot months a year. Because of this, I’ll just skip Slinky Dog Dash!
Don’t get me wrong, I love the attraction. For a kids roller coaster, I think it’s shockingly great with super smooth corners and bumps. If I’m in the parks at night, which admittedly does not happen very much as a local, and the line is short, I might hop in line for Slinky Dog. I think the ride is even better at night! Remember how hot that queue was? Yeah, when you’re actually riding it, you’re getting more of a breeze from the speed, but it’s just as hot and sunny. At night, you can see all the lights around Toy Story Land and Hollywood Studios, and it’s beautiful.
Queues can really make it or break it for me at Disney World. I can love the ride to the moon and back, but if the queue (where you spend the majority of your time for the attraction anyway) isn’t ideal, I’m likely skipping it.
Other rides I can throw on this list include Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, where, even though it’s very air-conditioned and indoors, the dark tunnel-like switchbacks truly make me feel like I’m a rat in the sewers of Paris, which is not my ideal Disney World vacation. The space can feel cramped, and you only see a small portion of the queue at a time, so you can’t tell how close you are to the end. Love how immersive the theming is, don’t love the feeling of not knowing where I am.
A special shoutout also goes out to Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. Oof! Despite the ride opening in 2022, I’ve only been on the ride four times, even though I love it and want to try to get all six songs. The queue can be loud, dark, and it’s a very difficult queue to leave if you decide you don’t want to spend over an hour of your EPCOT day in line. It also has pretty steep hills and curves, and as a wheelchair user, it’s a bit intense. The Space Mountain queue also has massive hills at the beginning and end, and somedays I just don’t want to deal with the incline.
If queues aren’t your jam, how can you still experience the attraction? Lightning Lanes are one way to go, but keep in mind that you’ll still experience the same issues with the queues, just for a shorter amount of time. You can also plan some night rides when it’s not as hot, bring water, hats, sunscreen, and snacks, and try to get in line when the lines are shortest. Sometimes rope dropping or waiting until the end of the night can help with shorter waits, but the My Disney Experience app also has the most up-to-date information on current wait times.

I’m not sure the seven dwarfs mine train is worth the wait! I have friends who list this in their top five, but unless the line is less than 30 minutes(which it never is), I’m skipping it!
