Have you ever wondered what happens when the Disney World Monorail goes down and can’t move on its own? We admit, we’ve certainly had the thought, and since it fortunately doesn’t happen THAT often, it’s not something we see frequently.
Yesterday, though? We were standing right in front of Magic Kingdom when it happened — the Monorail went down, and we got to see firsthand what happens when it needs some help moving. That’s how we learned that it gets its own little tugboat to pull it along!
We’re not kidding! The Monorails sometimes reach a point where they’re unable to move on their own, most often due to a technical issue. In order to get the Monorail off the track to get it fixed, as well as allow other Monorail trains to start moving on that track again as soon as possible, the affected Monorail car HAS to move.
But how can that happen if the issue is preventing the Monorail from “driving” safely? Well, that was the case yesterday, and we saw with our own eyes that a cute little tugboat arrived, and will pull the Monorail on the track to get it to where it needs to go! This is also how it can get people to another station to unload them safely, as sometimes the Monorail does stop in the middle of the track.

Isn’t this so cool? There’s so much that happens “behind the scenes” in Disney World that we love to see. Now, we know that for people who are on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, or those who don’t get to travel here often, you want everything to go perfectly. Since we have the amazing opportunity to be in the parks basically every day for our jobs, we think it’s super cool when we get to see things like this happen.

Yeah, the tug is parked in the woods, on a siding off the EPCOT beam, near the TTC.
Since the video is in front of the MK, it would take the tug a little while to get there, once a crew climbs up to the tug and fires it up.
Why don’t they one of these at Disneyland? Last month people were stuck the Monorail for hours and had to climb down ladders get off thr ride.
