Royal Caribbean confirmed it will build a new class of ships! The cruise line announced on January 29th that it had reached a series of agreements with Chantier de l’Atlantique (CdA) shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France, to build its highly anticipated Discovery Class ships.
Royal Caribbean stated that its Discovery Class ships will “redefine how Royal’s guests experience the world.” The agreement is for two firm ship orders, with the option for up to four additional ships. The first ship is expected to debut in 2029, with the second scheduled for delivery in 2032.
Jason Liberty, Chairman and CEO, stated, “The Discovery Class represents our continued commitment to shaping the future of vacations. These ships will be a showcase of what’s possible when design meets purpose, ultimately bringing the world closer to our guests.” Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean, added that the new class “introduces a bold new concept that puts our guests at the center of it all. It will deliver extraordinary, one-of-a-kind experiences — from cutting-edge design to immersive moments — every detail crafted to surprise and delight guests in ways they’ve never imagined, all while visiting truly breathtaking destinations around the world.”
Chantiers de l’Atlantique is a world-renowned shipyard with a long history of building ships for Royal Caribbean. The shipyard constructed Royal Caribbean’s original Sovereign Class ships beginning in 1985. Since then, the shipyard has built 21 ships for Royal Caribbean and is currently building Oasis 7 and Celebrity Xcite. Royal Caribbean has multiple ocean and river ships slated over the next three years, and expects to add eight land-based destinations by 2028.
