Believe it or not, it CAN get cold at Disney World! While it doesn’t happen very often, it can catch you by surprise if you’re not expecting it.
This Florida native happens to LOVE cold days at Disney World, and with another cold snap on the way, what better time to talk about things that you should only do at the Most Magical Place on Earth when it’s chilly out?! If you’re heading to Disney World this week or anytime when the temperatures drop, make sure you check out these can’t-miss snacks and activities!
Okay, okay, it might not be “cold” at Disney World compared to other places in the world, but it can catch you off guard, and you don’t want to be chilly while you’re trying to enjoy yourself! These are some of our team’s favorite things to do when the temperatures drop at Disney World.
Yes, soup for you
Disney World restaurants are home to some of the best soups we’ve ever had, but it’s hard to want to eat soup when it feels like it’s 100 degrees out. Chilly weather means it’s a great time to get some soup — and we have a few favorites, starting with the Lobster Bisque in a bread bowl from Les Halles Boulangerie et Patisserie.
Another iconic Disney World soup is the Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup from Le Cellier in the Canada Pavilion. This rich and creamy soup features bacon, beer, and LOTS of cheese. You can also find it at the EPCOT Food & Wine Festival, but if you ask us, it’s usually too hot to be eating soup outside!
Boma at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is home to a wide array of soups, and each one is truly delicious and unique. Venture off the beaten path and book a reservation at this buffet restaurant for some stellar eats you won’t find anywhere else.
We also love the Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup from Woody’s Lunchbox at Hollywood Studios!
Hot drinks galore
If you’re an iced coffee aficionado, consider forgoing your typical drink for a hot coffee instead! It’ll keep your hands warm while you make your way throughout the park. I’m partial to Joffrey’s, but there are several Starbucks locations around the Disney World parks and hotels as well.
You can also find hot chocolate at Joffrey’s and Starbucks, along with other places around Disney World, but for an extra special treat, we love the rich Hot Cocoa from Ghirardelli at Disney Springs!
Take in some shows
If you’re looking to get out of the cold, this weather is a great opportunity to check out some shows and other indoor attractions you might normally skip! Consider stopping by Mickey’s PhilharMagic at Magic Kingdom or even the Hall of Presidents. My personal favorite is the Carousel of Progress!
Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After is a relatively new show at Hollywood Studios that we’ve loved, and over at Animal Kingdom, you can check out Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!
Drink around the world
Sure, you can drink around the world at EPCOT even when it’s not cold outside, but heavy drinking in the heat can lead to a disaster if you’re not careful. Instead, consider drinking around the world when it’s a bit on the chilly side so you don’t run the risk of getting sick!
Just make sure you stay hydrated with plenty of water, too, since the alcohol will still affect you. It might seem like you don’t need to drink as much water when it’s cold out, but if you’re drinking alcohol, that rule still applies!
Finally wear those Spirit Jerseys
It seems like Disney releases a new Spirit Jersey every other day, and while we love the fun designs, we don’t love that we can hardly wear them to the parks without sweating our butts off. But when it gets cold outside, the Spirit Jerseys can come out and play!
These long-sleeved shirts are slightly thicker than a regular t-shirt fabric, making them a bit heavier than something we’d want to wear on a warm day. In the cold, though, they make a perfect outfit with some leggings or jeans and sneakers!
Time for s’mores
Did you know that most Disney World hotels offer campfires and s’mores for hotel guests on select nights? We don’t know about you, but sitting by a campfire when it’s hot outside is not our favorite thing in the world — no matter how much we like s’mores!
When it gets chilly, consider sticking close to your Disney World hotel and checking out the campfires!
Enjoy your hotel
Speaking of Disney World hotels, consider planning a rest day and enjoying activities at your hotel instead of the parks! To find out what’s happening at your Disney Resort Hotel, stop by the front desk for the monthly Recreation Activities Schedule. Enjoy games and crafts for a few hours or even enjoy the hot tub if you’re at a Deluxe Resort.
If you are staying at select Disney Vacation Club Resorts (Old Key West, Animal Kingdom Villas, BoardWalk Villas, Saratoga Springs, or Bay Lake Tower at the Contemporary), stop by the Community Hall. This is where you can find an array of activities, including Wii, table games, DVD and sports equipment rentals, books, and kid-friendly crafts. The majority of things to do are free, but there may be a nominal charge for certain art projects.
Don’t worry about long standby lines
No Lightning Lane? No problem — at least when it’s cold outside! We don’t know about you, but something about standing in that long line for Slinky Dog Dash in the heat just makes us want to crawl inside a damp, dark hole, but in cooler weather? We’ll wait all day! When the temperatures drop, consider waiting in lines that you might have overlooked due to them being outside or in the sun.
When it gets cold at Disney World, evening temperatures will be quite chilly, and you will want a jacket if you plan to stay for the nighttime show or get a last ride in as the park closes. Also, be prepared for cool temperatures in the morning (and even throughout the whole day some days!).
If you are headed to Disney World soon, make sure you are prepared for the cooler weather! Bring a jacket, and we also recommend packing layers for days when it gets warmer in the afternoons. That way, you can take a layer or two off to stay comfortable, then add them back as the sun goes down and temperatures begin to drop again.
We’ll be on the lookout for additional weather updates and more you need to know about from Disney World. In the meantime, make sure you stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for the latest Disney news and beyond!
