We have some breaking news for travelers headed to Jamaica soon. Jamaica was placed under a Level 3 travel advisory by the U.S. Department of State last year. Travelers were advised to reconsider visiting the country due to heightened safety concerns.
This week, the U.S. Department of State has reduced the travel warning to a Level 2, urging Americans to exercise increased caution if traveling to Jamaica. Here’s everything you need to know if you’re considering a Jamaica trip.
New travel guidelines to Jamaica warn visitors to avoid public transportation and driving between cities at night. Violent crime remains high throughout the country. Jamaica’s homicide rate is one of the highest in the Western Hemisphere, and cases of sexual assault against American tourists remain high.
The U.S. State Department still designates some areas of Jamaica as a level 4 travel advisory, urging Americans not to travel there due to high crime rates. U.S. government employees are prohibited from traveling to these areas, and they recommend Americans take the same precautions. A full list of Level 4 areas is available on the State Department’s website.
The U.S. Department of State says that tourist areas have lower crime rates than other parts of the country. Currently, Disney Cruise Line offers cruises with port stops to Falmouth, Jamaica, out of Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The city of Falmouth, beyond the port, is generally regarded as unsafe for tourists, but remains in a Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution travel advisory zone. That being said, use your own judgment and caution when traveling, deciding what is safe for you and your family.
The cruises to Falmouth, Jamaica, are part of their 7-Night Western Caribbean Cruise route. They sail to Falmouth, Jamaica, George Town, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel, Mexico. These routes depart from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Port Canaveral, Florida. Stay tuned to Disney Food Blog for more travel information.
