Time is running out for a beloved Disney California Adventure dark ride.
Disney California is getting A LOT of new additions in the coming years — including a new Avatar Land, Avengers Campus expansion, and a new Coco ride. However, before these new offerings become available, we’ll need to say goodbye to a long-established family-friendly ride. Here’s what we know…
UPDATE: Disney confirmed that Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! would remain open through 2026.
To make way for its new Avatar-themed land (which will take the massive movie franchise to the Disneyland Resort for the first time), Disney California Adventure is making room in its already-established Hollywood Land. A good chunk of backlot area will be permanently removed — meaning we’re saying goodbye to Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! in the process.
Disney confirmed in 2025 that the attraction will be permanently removed to make room for the land in early 2026. With winter already here, it’s a good bet that construction will begin this upcoming spring. However, aside from Disney saying the ride will close in early, nothing specific has been confirmed.
As of this writing, the ride is still open and operating per usual, and a closing date has yet to be announced.
Rumors of the ride closing have been persistent for years, but we can now say for certain that the ride is living on borrowed time. Since officially opening in 2026 (replacing the short-lived Superstar Limo), this family dark ride has taken passengers on a funny, taxi-cab-driven adventure that retells the plot of Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. Charming, nostalgic, and a great respite from the heat and Disney California Adventure’s more thrilling attractions, Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! usually has consistently busy wait times and is in high demand.
Losing it — for however long it takes Disney to complete the Avatar land — creates a notable gap in Disney California Adventure’s offerings.
As previously mentioned, James Cameron’s Avatar will finally come to the California theme park resort. Unlike Animal Kingdom’s Pandora, this new land will be based on Avatar: The Way of Water and its sequels.
It will also feature an original, thrilling boat adventure ride — packed with fantastic visuals that offer a truly immersive experience. We’re still learning more and more about the new land and its ride, but we’ll let you know when more details are revealed.
Unfortunately, the uncertainty of Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! affects upcoming 2026 Disneyland travel planning, especially if you’re trying to get one last ride in. Our recommendation is to make your way to the park as soon as you can and keep it posted right here at the Disney Food Blog for all the latest updates!

I’m guessing most of the monsters inc animatronics and deco will be shipped to Hollywood studios to be repurposed so not the last time you’ll see some of it.
