The Magic Kingdom’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is just months away from reopening after a long refurbishment, and that has us excited… and a bit concerned!
The Magic Kingdom’s long-tenured E-Ticket has been closed since January 2025 for a massive refurbishment project. According to Disney, the attraction is scheduled to reopen in Spring 2026 with “new magic” including a fully refurbished track and a new sequence inspired by the Rainbow Caverns of Disneyland’s Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland. All sounds good, right? Well…
The Pressure of Expectations.
By the time Big Thunder reopens in the spring, it will have been closed for close to a year and a half, which means some guests will likely expect MASSIVE changes to the attraction. They may feel shortchanged if the experience remains relatively similar from a guest experience perspective.
Location, Location, Location
Said expectations will likely only be heightened thanks to Big Thunder Mountain’s location, essentially right between the Piston Peak and Villains Land construction sites. While the Big Thunder refurb was unrelated to these projects, being the “first” project in this area to open will put even more expectations on it in the eyes of some guests.
Links to History
One new element we know is coming to Big Thunder Mountain is a new Rainbow Caverns sequence, which is inspired by a similar element in the Disneyland version. In turn, those Rainbow Caverns were inspired by the beloved Rainbow Caverns section of the Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland, a long-running Disneyland attraction that the West Coast version of Big Thunder replaced.
In other words, this new sequence has deep ties to Disney theme park history, and as we all know, hardcore Disney fans (and I count myself among them) can be a bit… prickly when it comes to judging Disney’s moves to honor history.
“The Wildest Ride in the Wilderness” is set to return to the Magic Kingdom soon. We just hope that the “new” Big Thunder Mountain can live up to the hype.
