We recently stopped by one of the premier snack spots in World Showcase — Kringla Bakeri og Kafe in the park’s Norway Pavilion — to check on one of EPCOT’s best-known snacks.
The Norwegian Kringla has been such an integral part of the Norway pavilion for decades, so much so that the bakery is actually NAMED after it. While the party has always remained solid, we’d felt it lost a bit of its shine recently. Was that still the case on our last visit? Let’s find out!
The Norwegian Kringla is a pretzel-shaped pastry served with sweet fondant, raisins, and a chocolate topping, all for $7.49.
So, the first thing that EPCOT veterans might notice is that the previously available almond version is no longer available, with only the chocolate version being available. While that may seem like a loss (and we’re sorry to any almond fans), it seems like the streamlining was actually very beneficial to the dish. We’re not sure if Disney changed the recipe when they dropped the almond version or if the focus on just one flavor improved quality control, but this new chocolate Kringla is, in our opinion, the best it’s ever been, both in flavor and texture.
For starters, the texture was flawless. In the past, we found the dough to be hit or miss, sometimes occasionally stale or tough. That wasn’t the case this time, as we found the Kringla to be completely soft, no crust, no chewiness issues, just fresh, pillowy bread.
That Kringla texture — think white bread or a light baguette — is then shaped into a pretzel and filled with raisins. They may “just” be dried out grapes, but those raisins pack an incredible punch of sweetness and rich depth to the dish. From there, the Kringle is drizzled with white and milk chocolates.
While that’s plenty of sweetness, the bread itself isn’t sugary at all, so the overall flavor profile never crosses into “dessert overload.” Instead, it’s a near-perfect balance, with most of the sweetness coming from the natural sugar in the raisins.
Overall, our recent visit to the Kringla Bakeri really left us with the feeling that the Kringla has found new life, and is arguably better than it’s been in years. In other words, if you haven’t popped by Norway lately, you might want to make your way over there ASAP during your next EPOCT visit. Stay tuned to DFB for more on Disney World snacks!
