According to the Orlando Business Journal, there might be an expansion at the Kissimmee Gateway Airport.
On November 4th, the Kissimmee City Council will consider a memorandum with the Kissimmee Airport Development Co. LLC to lease and develop 119.9 acres on the southern border of the airport. The site includes part of the Kissimmee Municipal Gold Course, which closed in 2018.
The agenda for the meeting said, “In recent years, the airport has been visited by aircraft manufacturers interested in locating operations to Kissimmee. However, due to the lack of infrastructure and utilities at the former golf course site, our responses did not meet their schedule and requirements. This places the property at an unfair disadvantage when competing against other airport sites.”
Two other companies have reached out to provide master development services for the land, but the city did not approve of their experience and funding. If the plan is approved, the Kissimee Airport Development Co. can begin surveying the land, conducting environmental studies, grading the site, and installing utilities.
This would be the first step towards developing a full lease and development agreement. The director of aviation for Kissimmee Gateway Airport, Shaun Germolus, told the Orlando Business Journal last year that they completed their Airport Master Plan Update, which includes a layout of uses for the property, mostly for aeronautical development. Germolus also spoke about how the company had the expertise and resources to create new jobs and boost the aviation business.
Germolus said, “They will be concentrating on surveying, geotechnical services, and environmental research. Conceptual plans for mass grading, storm water management, utility, and access plans will be developed to determine financial buildout costs, and access plans will be developed to determine financial buildout costs to assess moving forward with a master development agreement.”
The Orlando International Airport is also working on an expansion that will take about ten years to complete. By 2030, they’re planning on increasing public parking by 8,000 spaces (and if you’ve ever tried parking at this airport, you know how valuable this is) and a new baggage handling system for Terminals A and B, as well as other features to increase efficiency.
