Disney’s Hollywood Studios is a massive state of transition, headlined by a BRAND NEW Monsters, Inc. that’s going to recreate Monstropolis in all its terrifying glory. However, something about the land has us terrified… and not in the way Mike and Sully would want us to be.
The land is going to be headlined by a long-awaited suspended coaster ride based on the doors scene in the movie! We’ve only wanted that ride FOREVER, and it’s going to be the FIRST suspended coaster in Disney history, so we should be ecstatic! However, the more we think about it, the more we’re worried about that ride. We’ll tell you why.
The coaster was first announced at the 2024 D23 Ultimate Fan Event along with the rest of the land. Disney revealed more details on the ride during the The Future of World-Building at Disney panel at SXSW 2025. After Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter announced that “I can tell you that everyone at Pixar is excited about how this is coming together. It really is like a dream come true for us.”
During the panel, an animatic of the ride’s load area was show, confirming that the coaster will feature Disney’s first-ever vertical lift, as guests will “board the vehicle before being hoisted into the air (just like in the movie!) to zoom into the door vault” according to Disney. While that sounds fun, it also plays into some of the issues we’re concerned about.
It could have screens
Okay, so we’ve already shared this concern before, but we’re worried that the ride might use screens. Now, granted, screens aren’t ALWAYS a bad thing, but if they’re used a lot, it just takes away from the ride (and we saw a lot of complaints about Tiana’s Bayou Adventure for its use of screens). The concept art of the ride certainly makes the wall of doors on the right look like screens.

However, if this is the ONLY use of screens and there are other scenes and parts of the ride using animatronics and practical effects, it could work and not take away from the ride.

It might be a LONG time before the ride is completed
Disney has not yet set a timeline for the new Monsters, Inc. land or ride, though construction is on-going. Still, it could be likely that we’ll be waiting YEARS for the ride to be finished and open.
When Is the New Monsters, Inc. Land Opening in Disney World?
The seats might not be comfortable or friendly to all body types
Looking at the concept art, the seats for the suspended coaster don’t look entirely comfortable. We don’t see any pull bars that go over the shoulders, though, so it looks like you might be strapped in with your feet dangling over the edge of the seat. However, one thing we notice in looking at the seats is that they’re pretty slim, meaning they might not be accessible to all body types.
We have to give Disney some credit, though. The TRON Lightcycle / Run bikes aren’t friendly to all body types, but Disney does provide accessible seating for those who need it — could this ride have something similar?

It might not be family-friendly
One thing we’re really worried about is what the height requirement might be for the new ride. We did a little digging and looked at similar suspended roller coasters (based on what little knowledge we have about this one) at Six Flags, and the height requirements ranged from 42 inches to 54 inches. By comparison, Slinky Dog Dash has a height requirement of just 38 inches.
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and TRON Lightcycle / Run both have height requirements of 48 inches, while Expedition Everest has a height requirement of 44 inches. So, this suspended coaster might have a higher height requirement than a few of the Disney World coasters, meaning younger ones might be left out.
What Will Disney’s NEW Monsters, Inc. Roller Coaster Be Like? We Found Some CLUES
You might have to store things in lockers
Given how wild this ride turns out to be, you might have to store things in a locker, like you do for TRON Lightcycle / Run. A suspended roller coaster means more things could fly off (including shoes), so you may have to go through the whole process of storing your items before your ride.
Also, the concept art does not show any places on the ride vehicle to store your things. That can be a hassle, especially since you’ll have to retrieve your items after the ride.
So, these are some things to think about as we start to learn more about the new ride coming to Hollywood Studios. We’ll keep you updated as Disney reveals more details, so stay tuned to DFB for more.

This is a 5 years in the making project. I wonder if it will survive..l
I truly wish Disney would stop demolishing other attractions for new ones. Don’t they have 40 square miles of land???? Why not add new things and leave old ones? It might help with crowds too!
Using screens is a zero problem.
Speaking of Tron, we decided to do the sit up seats but when we saw the extra line for that we decided to ride it the regular way and it was great. The ride is way too short though.
That’s a lot of worrying about silly things for something that is several years out. The construction timeline will likely mirror Guardians in Epcot. Based on what has been shared, this one looks like it will be great and will be a hit.
on a scale from 1 to Tron… how long is this going to take!?!
Way to be a Negative Nancy! Why worry about things that MIGHT happen? The ride sounds fantastic and I only hope I’ll still be able to do roller coasters when it’s through.
Disney seems to be building more and more attractions that are not suitable for all body types. That was one thing that separated them from Universal – and why I have never been to Universal. I get that Disney wants to be more innovative with ride technology. Hopefully they will have an accessible option for those of us in larger bodies, especially from the waist down and seating is an issue.
I love coasters where your feet dangle . I never thought I would before trying one for the first time. On coasters with floors, I used to tense my legs and arms, bracing myself for the ride ahead. When there is no floor, you can’t brace your legs so it actually makes for a far less tense and more comfortable ride. I now try to relax both arms and legs on all coasters and it makes it far more comfortable.
As for lockers, I love these too. I don’t want to worry about whether my belongings are going to shoot off out the ride and get lost. It also means quicker loading and unloading as all of us with bags try to stick a foot through the bag handle so as not to lose it, then try to get the foot out again afterwards.
Every time I see the concept art for the seats on this ride, I’m left thinking “where is the door that we’re meant to be riding on?” The seats look like they’re made from scream canisters rather than doors.
That’s a lot of negative speculation/complaining. What’s the big deal about putting items in a locker? It’s a free locker. Welcome to riding rollercoasters!
