The holidays are coming up which means there’s going to be an increase in travel with everyone trying to get home to celebrate with their families.
Because you and everyone else are booking flights, prices can spike up as everyone has their limited time off and certain school break dates their trying to fit in between. There’s this magical concept called “goldilocks windows” where it’s not too early, or too late, to book your trips at the best price possible.
According to ABC News, if you’re planning on flying for Thanksgiving, you should book during the first week of October. For Christmas, you should book the first week of November.
Brian Kelly of The Points Guy says, “Timing is how you save money. It’s not the day you buy your ticket.” You can also use Google Flights to set alerts when prices drop, so you should start looking at flights, but don’t book them quite yet.
Kelly said, “we are seeing domestic airfare up 6% this year so far — the average domestic ticket during the holidays is over $600 and $1,000 internationally.”
Further on The Points Guy website, Kelly explains that tickets will cost more this year, but we should expect to see a drop in costs in the next few weeks. He also said that if you see a deal, jump on it.
It’s reconmdned to book one to two months ahead of travel and based on previous years, the expected average airfares dropped by $40. They also say the most expensive days to travel are the weekend after Thanksgiving with Saturday costing $709 and Sunday at $829 per average.
For Christmas, the most expsnsive days are December 20th with an average price of $861 and December 26th at $834.
