Southwest Airlines has really changed things up in 2025, and some travelers are not happy.

Orlando International Airport
Southwest Airlines has long been known for its two free checked bags and open seating policy, but big changes are shaking up the way its passengers travel. The airline has ended free checked bags, and its signature open seating will be replaced with assigned seats. For many loyal Southwest customers, this means rethinking how they pack, board, and navigate the airport. But some travelers are looking for a loophole in this new policy.
Now that Southwest Airlines has joined the list of carriers charging fees for checked luggage, travelers are doing everything they can to avoid that extra cost. The result? A flood of passengers with carry-on suitcases. This means more than the overhead bins can realistically hold. This surge in carry-ons has created a small but useful opportunity for travelers who don’t actually want to deal with stowing their bags above their seats: the gate-check trick.

Southwest Planes
Here’s how it works. If you arrive at your gate early, ideally before boarding begins, keep an ear out for an announcement from the gate agent asking for volunteers to “gate check” their carry-on bags. This is the airline’s way of freeing up bin space while keeping boarding moving smoothly. If you volunteer, they’ll tag your carry-on and send it down to the cargo hold. The best part? You won’t pay a cent. Your bag will be checked through to your final destination, and you’ll simply pick it up at baggage claim, just like a bag you paid to check.

Airport
There are a few important caveats. First, the bag you’re offering up must be carry-on size. Oversized or overweight luggage still counts as a regular checked bag and will be subject to the usual fees. Second, while this trick often works, it’s not guaranteed. It depends on the flight’s load and how full the bins are expected to be. That said, on recent Southwest flights out of Orlando, gate agents have been seeking volunteers nearly every time our team has flown with them.

Bags no longer fly free
This hack is especially handy if you have connecting flights and don’t want to lug your carry-on through the airport between gates. It also saves you from the boarding shuffle. No more worrying about whether your bin space will be taken or wrestling your bag into an awkward spot. Instead, you can board stress-free with just a personal item, and let your suitcase meet you at your final stop.

Southwest Airlines
So next time you’re flying Southwest out of Orlando—or really, any busy airport—consider arriving at the gate a little earlier. You might just snag yourself a free checked bag and an easier travel day, all thanks to a simple offer to help the airline with their overhead bin crunch. For more travel tips and news, follow DFB!
