According to the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Erin has officially formed in the Atlantic.
Tropical Storm Erin could turn into a hurricane by the end of the week on August 14th.
This would be the first Atlantic hurricane of 2025, and right now, it’s too early to determine if it could have any impact along the East Coast.
It’s currently located 430 miles west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm is moving west at 21 mph and is expected to “continue for the next several days with gradual slowdown in forward speed.”
While it’s possible it could become a hurricane by August 14th with 80 mph, it could also become a major hurricane by August 16th with 115 mph. To become a major hurricane, it would have to reach Category 3 strength with sustained winds of at least 11 mph.
There are currently no coastal warnings or watches in effect, but you should stay up to date with the National Hurricane Center and local news channels to make sure you’re getting current information.
Even if the tropical storm doesn’t turn into a hurricane, it’s possible that there could be lots of rain along the coast. If you’re visiting the East Coast, make sure you’re bringing your rain gear and are prepared to make your plans flexible to account for the different weather.
As a Florida local, I also like to make sure I have extra food and supplies on hand, all throughout hurricane season, even if there is no storm forming. This helps me avoid the last-minute chaos at the grocery stores and gives me time to prepare my house with flashlights, water, and, if needed, to prepare for any leakage.
